Yep. Ideal time. Knock over those fruit trees nearest the compost heap and get on with it. And I hope Mrs Horse has already turned that seedling in the kitchen window. Transplant it when it gets to about 4 inches and it's nice and sturdy. Unlike the other one, it will need serious staking. Tomato stakes are dead cheap at the local nursery.

Chooks would be another possibility except for the heightened rodent and snake risk. Having the second most poisonous snake in the world common around the neighbourhood is a bit of constraint.

Invite Sneak. Tie him to a stake just outside the chook pen.

Just have to watch the shade and the roots.

Never heard of it and I have no idea what it means.

Vegie growing is great therapy. I have an excuse to escape from the computer to prowl the garden. There's also nothing nicer than stuff fresh from the garden. Haven't bought salad makings in several years. I had a massive crop of peas this year. Taste a freshly-picked pea and you'd never eat frozen peas again.

So what are you growing in your apartment's windowbox?

Is that a gauntlet I hear hitting the ground? Tired of ads?

Apparently, all that time stuck in a car with an overheated dog, combined with the unenviable yet familiar experience of being a human jungle gym for disease ridden and smelling of poo children, has made my man Finbar a bit surly.

I can't say I'm not flattered to be the sudden subject of your gibes and gamboles, sir, however, I must emphasize that I am not the common rube you would encounter here, unaccustomed and unprepared to duel verbally with such a towering intellect as your own.

Bear in mind that I have weathered the unfettered verbal ministrations of the best the Catholic church has to offer, both in the form of sexless, frustrated nuns and oversexed, vicious, Jesuit priests. Toss in an overachieving older sibling, a type A parent, my current employer, and the various pretenders to the throne here on the net, and I feel I am well prepared for whatever onslaught an addled and enfeebled epistoler such as yourself can muster--between sessions of muttering in dirt, that is.

In short, do your best, for, in the end, I will most assuredly cut you down so low that whaleshit on the bottom of the ocean will look like fleecy white clouds from where you're standing.

We have a small balcony with some boxes attached to the railing that we grew a few wildflowers in. They came up pretty fast, but their roots were too exposed due to my wife not putting enough soil in when she planted them (I told her!).

Here is what they looked like when the shoots were first coming up.

Tell me about it. Mrs finar planted some native shrubs in containers at the bottom of our garden. There's more rock than soil down there, so containers were the go. I did suggest to her that one of the containers was too shallow for the job. Four weeks later, sure enough, the shrub was cactus. Botanically metaphorically speaking.

It took a little longer for ours to die. The wildflowers were pretty hardy. They grew like mad for a couple of months, then turned into dry husks.

Anyone have ideas for what to do with a ****-load of walnuts? Apparently, the things that have been falling out of the trees like an arty barrage are small walnuts. I've been chucking them out and letting the dogs eat em but now that I've looked at them proper and know what they are ........?

I think they'll work out well in banana nut and fruitcakes (although I didnt like the recipe on that site). I've also got figs, plums, and grapes but no veggies. The last tomatoes I planted got blasted by a severe southern thunderstorm followed by 100 degrees F temps. Needless to say they didnt make it.

There's always next season. I've got half a dozen varieties in the ground at the moment - flowers just starting - and another dozen or so varieties to get going over the next couple of months.

These pictures confirm what I already thought, Dermott is a real killer beast... the Ultimate Hunter.
