N.Y. Times Retracts Arnold Hitler Bombshell
The New York Times issued a de facto retraction on Saturday after misreporting two days earlier that Arnold Schwarzenegger once said he admired Adolf Hitler for what he did with his power.
In early Friday editions, the so-called paper of record quoted the California gubernatorial front-runner as saying, "I admire [Hitler] for being such a good public speaker and for what he did with it." Schwarzenegger's critics used the toxic quote to suggest he approved of the Holocaust.
But an actual transcript of outtakes from Schwarzenegger's 1975 bodybuilding classic, "Pumping Iron," shows that what the actor actually said was exactly the opposite: "I didn't admire [Hitler] for what he did with it."
The incendiary Schwarzenegger quote was corrected by the film's producer, George Butler, during an interview Friday where he admitted he misquoted the GOP front-runner in a 1997 book proposal.
Butler told the Times that the error stemmed from the fact that the book proposal quote, which was widely circulated after the Times and ABC News published the bogus story, had "dropped a few words."
The full and corrected Schwarzenegger quote, which was printed by the Times on Saturday, went like this:
"In many ways I admired people — It depends for what. I admired Hitler for instance because he came from being a little man with almost no formal education, up to power. And I admire him for being such a good public speaker and for his way of getting to the people and so on.
"But I didn't admire him for what he did with it. It is very hard to say who I admired and who are my heroes. And I admired basically people who are powerful people, like Kennedy. Who people listen to and just wait until he comes out with telling them what to do. People like that I admire a lot."
Butler couldn't explain how he made the mistake, telling the Times, "I am amazed that something like that escaped me."
But what's perhaps more amazing is that the Times, ABC News and the rest of the mainstream press ran wih a bogus story they knew could severly damage Schwarzenegger's reputation without verifying the poisonous quote. |

He still ahead in the lattest poll and the Recall is winning 52% to 42%(most polls have put recall between the high of 60% to the low of 52%).
These stories came out too late to sick to him. With a day left I doubt davis can come back now. There is just not enough time.

With a day left, and the fact that may people have already voted, about 2,000,000 people, I doubt Davis resigning would make a difference. Davis wants to hang on to power and I think in his head he thinks he can still win.

Will you say the same thing if the recall wins 60-40 and Arnold gets 40% of the vote?

Why? This could have never happened if people were not mad at Davis for what he has done to the state. I am talking about what he has done after the Nov 2002 election, not to mention what he did before that. You cant get 2,000,000 people to sign the petition to get the recall started if people were happy with Davis.

I think around 15,000,000 voters will come to the polls, that means anther recall effort will need at least 1.5 million signitures. I doubt a anther recall will work. As for Issa, he just speed up the process more.

Well I voted on both prop 53 and 54.

I don't think 40% is good enough to be elected to office. Y'all should have instant run-off, so you can at least get someone in who has majority support.
I also think Davis is being unfairly blamed for the budget short-fall, considering the Feds have practically cut the states off. The Federal budget is massively in arrears, and so are 38 other states.
I've never liked Davis, btw, and I'm happy enough to see him go. Nor do I think Arnie's politics are all that bad, considering. But there doesn't seem to be a respect for the democratic process. That's what concerns me most.
The Repugs have started something ugly, which is now going to be used perpetually as a weapon by both sides. The recall succeeded because a million pumped millions of dollars in, hiring out of state consultants to gather signatures. Though it tapped into a deep dissatisfaction, I doubt it was capable of sustaining itself without money and outsiders. Now the Dem's are gonna do the same thing if Arnie wins, and it will just keep gonig until the law gets fixed.

Well if you combine the Mclintock and Arnold vote it totals up to 55% of the vote. And who knows what the final results will be in the end. As far as recall being using again, it has already been tryed 35 times against a sitting governor since it has been past, and is used against local office holders a lot. I doubt this will result in more recalls of the governor.

Che, I agree that the recall is a nasty weapon that will now be exploited. It's a political pandora's box if you wish. Yet, it was installed through democratic processes so I don't see how it is a demise of the system. Yes it needs to be fixed, but that is the beauty of our system, is it not?
For once, I will also agree that there should be a majority vote here... Don't quote me, this is the only time... Maybe that is how we can fix the recall measure.
Davis is being blamed for the budget problem, and it is wrong. Yet, when there is less to spend what is spent needs to be looked at more closely.
Billion dollar contracts to Texan Electrical distributers and gas collectors is rediculous, and he messed up there, and hasn't even apologized for it.
Millions of dollars to Sheriffs and other special interest groups when they don't need the money.
Taking money from education.
Raising taxes and fees on everything from bubble gum to cars.
Giving illegals political rights.
many countless other things...
The guy needs to be outed, even if he isn't to blame for the deficit, he didn't help any. It is just easier to tell the stupid public this...
One thing I think is funny is that they are using the budget deficit as campeign boost for the Dems, claiming the have spent less than anyone in the past... No sheit! Because there is no money, you spent it all in your first term on Texas!!!
Crimeny.

Actually Japher the rate payers are paying for the contracts not the tax payers. The problem was that they spent money like there was no tommorrow and did not think that the internet boom would bust. Even with that, the state still took in more taxes then when Davis was first in office. The problem is that spending outpaced the increase in the taxes coming in.
