	Do you know any good russian literature, poetry music or art? HELP! Remove this text

I need a piece of russian literature, poetry music or art that is actually good(something I could apreciate or relate too)-either made in russia or by a russian not living in the country, which was made no later then 1921.

Anyone know of anything they could recommend?

i'm no expert, but i've always found dostojevski rather good...
well he's one of the best writers in his genre, so if I were you i'd check him out

As far as literature goes, Dostoevsky and Tolstoy are the two major 19th century Ruskies. "Crime and Punishment" and "War and Peace," respectively, are the most well-known novels of these authors and are both excellent (particularly "Crime and Punishment"). Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina" is also good stuff.

Pushkin is supposedly the eminent Russian poet of the period, but I've never cared much for poetry myself.

As for music, all I can think of is Tchaikovsky.

Pretty good synopsis. I got the feeling that Tolstoy was kinda bitter about the "nature of history" when he wrote "War and Peace."

Having read everything listed already, I'd recommend THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV. by Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky.

Crime and Punishment was good but also a bit slow.

War and Peace has many good parts but I didn't agree with some of the themes he was pushing.

I really liked Anna Karenina, but it did drag on in areas, and if you're a big fan of happy endings.............

Gogol's short stories are definitely worth reading if you just want to dip your toe into 19th century Russian literature.

The 1921 line just rules out Battleship Potemkin - but only by four years.

Chekhov is writing about the lower, and the middle classes. Personally I think it's more interesting.

Yes, his Metamorphosis, is quite the classic. I enjoyed that one quite a bit.

not typical, and not often mentioned but I enjoyed Turgenev's "fathers and sons"

And yes "war and peace" - even if you dont agree with his philosophy, its just a great story with lots of memorable characters.

Oh, and in that vein, may I suggest Pasternaks "dr. Zhivago" i certainly didnt agree with HIS ideas, but its also a good story with memorable characters.

Too much god - I think thats just dosty - Tolstoy, Turgenev, chekov, and gogol are far different.

He was ... mostly. He wrote plenty of good short stories too, though. A bit like Oscar Wilde in that respect I suppose (although their styles hardly bear comparison).
