Just watched a wonderful program on the history channel, about a Nazi plan to hit new york back in 1944, with a dirty bomb, launched from Germany itself.
quote:
This episode examines a diabolical plan devised to strike back at the United States during World War II.
Aviation historian David Myhra has been investigating secret German aircraft projects for more than 20 years. He's uncovered evidence of this startling plan. Through vivid 3D animation, photos, and re-creations, these unusual and top secret projects are finally revealed. We travel to Germany and uncover the secret labs and factories where the "Amerika Bombers" were being designed, tested and constructed.
In late 1944, the Allies were about to deliver a devastating defeat to Nazi Germany. Incessant air strikes were leveling German cities one by one. It was a desperate situation for Germany. Hitler was dedicated to using any means necessary to avoid an unconditional surrender. Against this bacdrop, top Nazi brass hatch a plan that would usher in the age of global terrorism: the "Amerika Bomber": project. the secret plan would have included Hitler's so-called wonder weapons. But did the Germans have a radioactive bomb that could contaminate and kill thousands? We'll uncover the evidence.
Three aerospace designers, Wernher von Braun, Eugen Sanger, and Reimar Horton each had a different solution to the problem of reaching new York to deliver this radioactive bomb. In a race against each other, time, and devastating setbacks, new technology would emerge that would eventually change the world.
The Nazis never did bomb new York City, but the plan to do so was very real. This program will help reveal this little-known, but very important part of history.

It makes sense that such a plan would have been conceived, but id never realised they actually went as far as they did, in trying to do it, and with a dirty bomb also.
Allied bombing put an end to the program, good job too. What do you think would have happened had Germany managed to hit New York with a Radioactive bomb ??

You Frenchies have pretty clean hands, considering you didn't really fight or anything. |
Well, we French cowards still lost more people than you American heroes in this war. But indeed, we French hadn't the opportunity to commit too much mindless slaughter.
The Brits, Yanks and Soviets (who I meant with "we", i.e the allies) did have the opportunity, and they did take it. I have lived for 2 years in a city that has been completely leveled during WW2. The "old town" part of the town spans on two house blocks (literally), and it has been rebuilt since WW2 on a few remaining standing stones.
When you have lived in such city, you can fathom what "levelling" means. And I never even heard about the levelling of Stuttgart in my history books - must have been way too common to bother mentioning. Well, at least in Stuttgart, unlike Dresden, the allies had a good excuse to slaughter people: there was a factory there

errr.....Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't this bomber have had to pass over the air defenses of Great Britain, and also of the eastern seaboard of the United States?

I guess I was talking about the fact that once proven, the Germans could have continued to re-use the same technology to attack the US.
However, it didn't happen because those terrible attrocities that the allieds had carried out obliterated German industry, which could no longer supply Von Braun with the materials with which to create the missile.
Seems to me it was bomb or be bombed, kill or be killed..
I also believe even if the Germans had succeded, it would not have done much in the way of stopping their defeat, just would have rendered New York and some whereever else they hit radioactive for a considerable amount of time, and many would have died over the long term of exposure. Im not convinced either that they could have hit with much accuracy, and with dirty bombs, you need to be accurate.

Why didn't they try to hit Washington instead?
Oh wait the British had already done that.

Not really. I wouldn't be so arrogant as to claim to understand the horrors of WWII simply because I've seen what a city rebuilt from rubble looks like 50 years later. |
I would be supposed to insert a witty comment, but since I have no wits, here's the lame answer. If you decide to live in leveled Osaka after having lived a few years in history-laden Nara, you'll really experience the traces of war's destructiveness even 60 years after. You may even be wondering about how it felt for the locals to have their whole city, neighbours, friends being progressively totaled. You won't understand the horrors of WW2 for sure, but you'll have somehow touched directly a real place of war, of real dirty, cowardly war.
Now I'm not saying the Japanese were saints. They were infinetly more cruel than the Yanks, and equally cowardly when it came to massacre defenseless people. I'm saying war is nasty, and you get to approach this nastiness when you live in a leveled city.

Ballistic missiles do not care about air defense systems. Not in WW2 at least. How many V2s were shot down by the Brits? |
Read the article. It refers to attempts by the Germans to build a bomber, not a rocket, capable of reaching New York.

The Germans had high altitude bombers that could fly above the highest altitude of a defensive air. If the Germans could have developed bombers like these with intercontinental range, they could have bombed New York with impunity. The B52 was just such a bomber. It was developed only a few years after the war. So I think it was technically feasible for the Germans to develop their own B52, but they ran out of time. |
The B29 was already in production, so why would they have had to wait? The B29 could have reached N.Y. from Germany, and it's maximum altitude exceeded that of most fighters. Such a flight would have beem one way of course, and you also have to consider that bombing from >30,000 feet even for American bombers was rather inaccurate. Even Hitler might have had the sanity to understand that the benefit from such a practice was far outweighed by its cost.

The Japanese. They had a plan to bomb the Panama canal using submarine launched bombers.
