1969?

aint it something how there's no more heroes? a soldier who dies for his country? nah. he's a baby killer... a police officer? nah. racist profiler and brutalizer... a scientist trying to stop world hunger? nah. he's making genetically engineered food and somehow that's evil.

how about individuals? George Washington? No... slaver and oppurtunist. Jefferson? No, slaver and raper...

whats the deal with that?

anybody larger than life and lionized by the masses is not a hero. they're invariably egomaniacs, unless they carry a ginormous sword and save the world by cleaving in two any enemies with their limit breaks, even if they have guns.

a hero is someone like your mother, who carried you in her womb for nine months, or your father, who stuck around when nobody else would.

i like how people give credit to a man who just so happened to be lucky enough to be around near when it happen, and shortchanging all of the little people who were the ones who actually did defeat the communist system.

i mean, we all realize now, i guess, that the regular american citizen who took pride in his country's democracy, or the pole who struggled with solidarnosc or the germans who fled across the berlin wall seeking a new democratic life had nothing to do with the downfall of a grossly unpopular government whose only claim to power was that it had more guns than any individual?

Since he didn't risk anything of his own, I hardly see that qualfying as heroic. Heroes are people who put their lives and property at risk for others. Like the NYC police and firefighters during 9/11, or Coast Guard divers who jump into stormy seas to rescue folks.

so anyway... you're saying greeks were cynnical about soldiers as heroes back in the peloponessian wars? i wouldnt blame though as those wars did quite a bit of damage to greece and paved the way for Macedonian subjugation. just a generation before, however, the men who died at Marathon, Salamis, and Thermopylae were almost diefied.

When did the last hero die?

I think that the medieval Spanish text The Poem of the
Cid is the latest Heroic Epic in litterature. Commonly know as El Cid (1043- 1099) he was a Castilian military leader and national hero who fought the Moors. When he was 22 he was appointed standardbearer by the King.

Maybe there are some texts which date after this one?
