Take homophobe and transplant them to the SF Bay Area, or any major metropolitan in CA... For extreme cases, put them in The Castro District (SF) or Hollywood.

How about something better for punishment? Tie them down in front of a television, and force them to watch Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Will & Grace, and Queer as Folk for days on end, non-stop.

When I got out of HS I was homophobic, but then in College I had several friends come out of the closet... I was disturbed at first, and then realized that they were no different. I have since made friends with ppl I like and don't care much for their sexual preferences. Some of this has to do with my detattchment from religious establishments, as well as the liberal influences obtained through higher education and being in California my whole life, a state which is more accepting of alternative lifestyles.
Thus, religion, education, and society all have a play on whether someone is homophobic or not. |
Wow, it sounds like you made a real change after entering college. Glad to see you renounce your hatred.

I don't know the two other shows, but Will & Grace has been designed in a way that homophobes won't be bothered at all. There's no physical intimacy between the gays in the show at all because the harmlessness is necessary for non-gay wievers. Please don't regard Will & Grace as a breakthrough before we see some passionate kissing on the show.

There were episodes where Will or Jack had a date, and there was one episode where Will and Jack locked lips as a form of protest.
The very fact that you have to mention a few out of a million episodes backs my point. Will and Jack locked to protest, sure, but it wasn't even remotely anything emotional. Please admit that ACTUAL intimacy - as in the close-up intense kissing that's normal in hetero relations on film - doesn't take place between gay men in Will & Grace.

Now, by homophobia, are we using this correctly to mean someone who actually has a phobia, or fear, of homosexuals? Or are we equating homophobe to someone who simply hates homosexuals? |
Homophobia means hatred of homosexuals. Don't follow the litteral roots. The misnomer comes from the often prevelant use of fear tactics to justify oppression.
Anti-semisitm isn't about fear of Jews, and yet oppression of Jews is frequently couched in getting them before they get us, ie., they need Christian blood for Pasach pastries, they're poisoning the wells, they control the world's money, ZOG, they stabbed Germany in the back, etc. Evil always tries to pull a sheepskin over itself, and so with homophobia, the sheepskin was mistaken as the real thing.
