I think you're mixing up the Silmarillion and LOTR...

Just nitpicking...

Ah yes... I misread.

Anyway, The Hobbit is definitely my favourite of the books I've read (Hobbit, LOTR, Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales). LOTR is probably second.

I'll probably go see ROTK in January, I'm in no rush.

It's not like the movie is going anywhere.

I had to wait an entire year already, two weeks isn't gonna make any difference (except that the theater will probably be slightly less crowded, and the ticket probably slightly less expensive)...

Not to mention I'm not much of a fan of the movies in the first place.

I agree. I haven't read the books either and decided against reading them until after I have seen all three movies. If one watches the DVD commentaries by Peter Jackson and the writers they will often mention why things where changed and sometimes it was simply a matter of time constraints and a result of another change made earlier. Over all I think the movies can stand by themselves as great stories. The lengths in to which they went to create middle earth are amazing and should be appreciated. I'm not saying there is no room for critizism but over all a pretty damned good effort..

IIRC, the Wizards were created and placed on Middle-Earth with the sole purpose of defeating Sauron.

Bingo that's why its my favorite out of all of them. I feel that the movies are actually closer in spirit to the Silmarillion than Lord of the Rings, especially regarding the portrayal of the Elves.

But I always liked the appendixes too...

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE

If you are a purist, you probably will not like some of the subtle character alts (especially Denethor and the relationship between Sam and Frodo), but Jackson (and kudos to Lee/Howe in the art direction dept.) absolutely nail everything in capturing the spirit of Tolkien in this final installment.

Watch this movie without trying to line it up with the book and you can accept the omissions and character alts as valid in their own right. For instance, my very favorite scene in the series did not make the cut (The Mouth of Sauron will be in the Extended DVD), and it would of added to the movie, yet I did not miss it as much as I thought I would (and based on its placement in the book, it wouldn't have had the same impact in the movie anyhow)

Helm's Deep is a walk in the park compared to Minas Tirith/Pelannor Fields.

As a sidenote - the new 'Harry Potter' trailer was shown too...

I promised to watch it with my wife. We're taking off Monday (daytime) to watch it, hopefully so the theatre isn't quite as packed.

This does mean my abstaining from just going in the meantime... ahh.. the things we do for love.

I heard there is an IMAX print. I wonder if Lowes Time Square will be showing it... and when?

Second that. People who haven't read the books will have an advantage, IMHO.
Also the manner of how they won differs greatly, but when reading the books that is what I thought would happen. It's really the only way they could've beaten such an army.

There's a theatre around here that's showing the trilogy using the extended version for the 1st 2. We need to combine that with an IMAX.

as a whole, the trilogy is pretty well done, if full of changes compared to the books though. the debate is irrelevant though, since a 1-1 translation of the book would have made for a boring movie. however I detest most scenes showing civilian suffering. call me a cynic, but that's too emotion-based and too far away from the whole fantasy thing. I can only enjoy an orc storm onto a human city if I don't have to see crying mothers with little babies. too close to reality, as silly as it sounds... fantasy is an escapist genre after all, not a critical one.
