A team that loses early has probably improved throughout the season, while a team losing late, all other things equal, is playing at that improved state.

Bullshit. Some teams improve over the course of the season, but others don't. Injuries and coaching changes take their toll on any number of teams, certainly enough to make your half-baked theory of "the earlier the loss, the better the team" completely untrue.

quote:
Well you sure as **** seem to think so. If there are three teams that are 10-0, and one team loses its star player to injury and loses its last game, you'd say tough luck.

Strawman. The situations aren't comparable in the least.

Usually it is the case that they do. A few exceptions here or there doesn't change the fact that most teams generally will play at a higher level at the end of the season than in their first few games.

The situations aren't comparable in the least.

Of course they are! Like YOU said:

What if a team loses a star player to injury towards the end of the season, drops a game, but get the player back in time for the bowls? Do you really think that they are less deserving than the other team

I can use the EXACT SAME ARGUMENT, WORD FOR WORD, to describe why a team that has lost one game because its QB got injuried should get a chance against the undefeateds. Why is it any different? How is it NOT comparable?!

In my scenario, a previously undefeated team loses one of their last games because of an injured player and ends up with the same record as two other one-loss teams who lost earlier in the season. In that case, I don't think it's fair to punish a team just because they lost late; they all have the same record.

In your scenario, there are three undefeated teams. One of them loses because of an injury and ends up with one loss while the other two, I assume, remain unbeaten. In this case, I would have no qualms about saying the one-loss team is not deserving of a title shot, as they have a worse record than the other two teams.

Obviously, the two situations aren't similar at all. Only a complete ****ing retard would think that they are the same...

Of course they are. In one you say it isn't 'fair' to punish a team if they lost late because they lost to an injury. So why is it 'fair' to punish them because of an injury based on the other teams' records?

The fact of the matter is that football includes injuries. It is part of the game. No matter what should you get a pass for 'fairness' if your star player got injured.

Alright, in a VERY brief moment of sympathy for the poor teams who didn't get to play in a Bowl game I figured I would try to make up a few more so everyone could go to a Bowl and feel good about themselves.

Bill Callahan is the new head coach at Nebraska.

http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_np...38&u_sid=969160

I really don't know what to make of this hire. The man led the Raiders to a 4-12 season, but he also led them to the Super Bowl the year before. Guess I'll just have to wait and see on this one...

NCAA says no to computer company's $30 million title-game proposal

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Unhappy with college football's split national championship, the head of a computer company thought he could entice Southern California and LSU to play each other later this month by offering $30 million in scholarship money.

The NCAA quickly hit the "delete" button, saying there was no way such a game could be played.

Ted Waitt, chairman and CEO of Gateway Inc., which is based in the San Diego suburb of Poway, offered each school $10 million in scholarships for disadvantaged students if they'd play each other the weekend of Jan. 24-25. The winner would have gotten an additional $10 million in scholarships and $1 million in Gateway products.

"Everybody wants to see it happen," Waitt said. "It'd be fun. But everybody is afraid of the NCAA. We just want to know one good reason why this can't happen."

Waitt made his proposal in letters faxed Thursday to LSU Chancellor Mark Emmert, USC President Steven Sample and NCAA President Myles Brand.

"It's just not as simple or easy as doing that," said Wally Renfro, the senior adviser to Brand. "Decisions about postseason football are made by the membership of the association. Those two institutions would not be able to make that decision in any event.

"Right now, by the bylaws, it couldn't happen."

And the NCAA wouldn't jump even with $30 million in scholarships up for grabs?

"No," Renfro said.

Besides numerous logistical problems, games aren't allowed past last Sunday, which was the date of the Sugar Bowl.

USC was No. 1 in both the AP media poll and USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll at the end of the regular season, but slipped behind No. 2 LSU and No. 3 Oklahoma in the computers and the final BCS standings because of a weaker strength of schedule.

LSU won the BCS national championship by beating Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl while USC won The Associated Press title by beating Michigan in the Rose Bowl.

I'd much rather have Callahan than Spurrier. The Fun 'n' Gun would never work at Nebraska; Callahan's offense should be good.

Hopefully we can keep Pelini at D Coordinator...

The Fun 'n' Gun would at least be able to get the necessary players for that offense. Callahan is an average NFL coach with little experience in recruitment.

And Callahan runs a West Coast Offense. You don't have to do the option, but a Walsh-lite won't work at Nebraska either... Hell, look at Willingham at Notre Dame (he had to go back to a power running game to avoid getting totally embarassed this year).

The Fun 'n' Gun would never work in Nebraska. You ever been to Nebraska in November? What's Spurrier going to do when it's 10 degrees out and the wind is blowing 20 miles an hour?

He was a college assistant for over a decade. Barry Alvarez raves about his recruiting skills.

As for him being an average NFL coach, well, the average NFL coach is better than 95% of all college coaches. And he must not be that bad if John Gruden wanted him to come be Tampa's offensive coordinator.

We aren't talking about some ho-dum college coach, we are talking about Steve Spurrier! I mean this guy gave Duke (DUKE!!) winning seasons!

O-Coordinator is a fine place for him, but when his team had to literally restrain themselves from punching their head coach, I'm not sure that head coach should be a head coach anymore. I mean Nebraska just hired a guy that totally lost control of his team. I give him 3 years at most with the Huskers.

They should have just thrown more money at Houston Nutt.

North Carolina is a hell of a lot warmer than Nebraska. Even Spurrier knows his offense won't work in cold climates, which is why he said he'd never coach in any place farther north than D.C. Spurrier will be a good choice for Texas when they fire Mack Brown next year, but he never would've worked at Nebraska.

Now you're really talking crazy. I'd take Callahan over Nutt in a heartbeat.
