US to Create a Secret Police in Iraq Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/mai.../ixnewstop.html

quote:
Nine months after the demise of Saddam Hussein's regime and his feared mukhabarat (intelligence) operatives, Iraq is to get a secret police force again - courtesy of Washington.

The Bush administration is to fund the new agency in the latest initiative to root out Ba'athist regime loyalists behind the continuing insurgency in parts of Iraq.

The force will cost up to $3 billion (£1.8 billion) over the next three years in money allocated from the same part of the federal budget that finances the Central Intelligence Agency.

Errr... yes, this is a great idea! A secret police would never abuse its power; after all secret polices have never done anything like that. And it certainly wouldn't allow the US undue influence on Iraqi democracy.

As for forming it from the party militias, that's absolutely brilliant; I mean, you can always trust a Sadrist to fight in the interests of democracy and liberty (and certainly the US government!). And a secret police certainly would never, ever, ever backfire; after all, look at how well SAVAK kept militantly anti-American elements from taking over Iran.

Why is it that every new step taken by us in Iraq seems to be even more retarded than the last? It's not just that it's evil, which I can understand. However I'm flabberghasted at how idiotic this is all is.

Errr... who exactly was the person to call this a "Secret" police. A national FBI style police force to fight insurgency would seem to be in order.

Regarding the source, others seem to be picking the story up, like the CS Monitor, so it probably isn't that unreliable:
http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&l...raq&sa=N&tab=wn

And if everything in the paper is Tory propaganda, why would it make up a story that would help domestic leftists?

quote:
Errr... who exactly was the person to call this a "Secret" police.

From the article:
quote:
A former US intelligence officer said: "If successfully set up, the group would work in tandem with American forces but would have its own structure and relative independence. It could be expected to be fairly ruthless in dealing with the remnants of Saddam.

quote:
Although officially banned by the ruling Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA), militia groups are already patrolling cities and towns in many areas of Iraq against the backdrop of an increasing number of extra-judicial killings of prominent former Ba'athists.

The Pentagon and CIA hope to organise the various and sometimes competing groups into a single force with the local knowledge, the motivation and the authority to hunt down pro-Saddam resistance fighters. According to officials in Washington, the new agency could eventually number 10,000. Initially at least, salaries will be paid by the CIA, which has 275 officers on the ground in Iraq.

Some of these militia groups tend not to be very nice.

quote:
Didn't see you complaining about the secret police when Saddam was there. Poosy.

Then you didn't look hard enough. Arse. I've always been critical of the Ba'athist regime, as well as any other authoritarian gov't (except, of course, for ones I'm ignorant of).

We did what we had to do at the time. Iran winning that war and taking over would not have been a good thing.

It's not simply about creating a national law enforcement agency, it's about giving a bunch of nasty militias CIA aid and training, and a fair amount of legal autonomy.

Ever wonder why CIA HQ and FBI boot are in Langely.

And of course bieng brand new and dealing with active insurgensts probobly requires them to be a little more robust in certain areas than the average FED.

1. The CS Monitor is a respected, reliable paper. Only a paranoid person would doubt that.
2. I said that the CS Monitor picked up the story because lotm doubted the accuracy of an article by the London Telegraph, which is a right-wing paper.

The Christian Science Monitor is respected by conspiracy theorists and anyone desperatly trying to get a published article that perverts facts into what they want to hear.

ie YOU

Try putting that as a source in an academic paper at any college nationwide and tell me what happens

What specifically "might" happen?

And I love your new sig, Ted: Poosy. Very apt for someone who would care about Iraqi liberty only when doing so is politically advantageous.

Yep, you definitely are deluded. And once again, it's a right-wing paper, the Telegraph, that published the article. The CS Monitor and others are picking up the story.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Ramo, the Telegraph and the CSM are of the same family. Marginalized rumor factories and spin doctors. This story has not been picked up by anyone with even a hint of respectability.

There is no academic anywhere that would touch either with a ten foot pole, from any background or politicalorientation. There is a goot reason for this.

Both are B*****T

No matter how many times you say that the CSM is unreliable, that assertion won't become any more true.
