I don't know about India, but at least 60% of the population in China are in rural areas.

Spiffor is correct: People are overrating China in ranking of World Powers. China is strong in East Asia, but has little influence in the rest of the world. There really aren't too many nations capable of truly projecting power on a global scale nowadays. I'd say

1) USA
2) UK
3) France
4) Russia
5) China
6) Japan(Would be alot higher if this country had more political will to excercise power)
7) Germany(Military still too land based, becoming basically puppet of France)
8) Italy
9) Netherlands
10) Canada

Huh?

a) California is a lot lower than 6. Closer to 10 (its economy is a similar size to that of Canada)
b) It doesn't count as #6 because it's not a separate country.

The world's largest economies (in order, and guessing)

1) USA
2) China
3) Japan
4) India
5) Germany
6) France
7) Russia
8) Italy
9) Canada (?) Korea (?)

Netherlands? Huh? You mean the one with all the windmills?

EDIT: The population of the Netherlands is something like half of Canada's, and their economic output per capita is probably similar or slightly lower. Unless you're claiming they spend twice as much as percentage of their GDP as we do (which would put them at US funding levels, something very few Euro nations are) then they have a smaller military...

According to the CIA World Fantasybook, France's is slightly larger than the UK's, whcih is no indication of reality of course.

They have been historically very similar in size, yes.

More precisely, you should see here and here
I was wrong on China's GDP, it is almost as high as France's and UK's and already bigger than Italy's. In PPP terms, China is second, with half us GDP.

Bullshit.

Go look up the numbers. California outputs about a trillion dollars a year.

US as whole is 10 trillion
China is 5-6 trillion
Japan is 3.5 trillion
Germany is 2 trillion
France, UK, Italy, Russia are all in 1.4-1.6 trillion range

EDIT: this is for ted

UK is influential in its former colonies, it is influencial around the world in terms of investment, it is associated with all EU military initiatives (surprisingly), and it is probably the only country that has a marginal influence on Washington's decisions, making UK effectively "first mate" in the US-led world.

France has similar qualities, but has an autonomous foreign policy, and has much more leverage in Europe due to its alliance with Germany. Both countries are competing for the same economical-diplomatic rank. But in the end, they'll become irrelevant as China and India rise (and Russia comes back from the dead), and they'll need to work together to rise to power status again.

UK has a much greater diplo influence than any euro country other than France.

Nobody wonders what Germany or Italy will think. People do wonder what France and the UK will think.

Actually, a lot more people care what the UK thinks than what China thinks.
