I just came accross these guidelines in the AU forum:

For example, don't contact other players until you have actually met them in the game, don't trade mini-maps until you have Map Making, and don't form military alliances until you have embassies. If you do something that would be generally considered cheating, like replaying your turn, using an external program to view or change the save, or accidentally viewing another player's turn, report it to the other players.

The second part I think we have been doing, but the first part caught my attention. We agreed to limit contact according to this, should we do the same for maps and embassies?

i think that would have to be a tournament wide decision, but i have found in general that in pbem except for the contact part this is not followed regarding embassies and diplomatic agreements

I have no objections to these rules. But, if someone wishes to form alliances even without the tech enabling it, i have no objection to that either.

Trading maps before MM shoud not be allowed tho. But, if someone wishes to do/has done it, i dont care so much. I dont intend to do so in any of my games.

Trading screenshots before mapmaking should be a pretty obvious faux pas, I think. It's not exactly a tech that enables alliances, but the establishing of embassies. This is more of a grey area.

You have a point there. It would make sense to have embassy before military alliance. Again, not a matter of life and death to me, but if i had to vote, i'd vote yes for embassy.
