What's wrong with sending jobs overseas, if doing so will increase profits? What else would be the point of business, if not to maximize profits?

You're absolutely right. Most American workers don't care about freedom, and would welcome the opportunity to legislate against a business's freedom to outsource labor. Doesn't make it right.
Lest one forgets, though, conservatives don't care about freedom, either, so don't waste your time bringing up examples of Bush and Ashcroft being authoritarians. Duh.

Freedom in the "lack of coercion" sense, at any rate.

You can argue all you want about how outsourcing is a good thing, but in the minds of many people, outsourcing means replacing good jobs with McJobs. As one union official said, you can't have an economy where we all sell haircuts to one another. Praising sending jobs overseas, regardless of whether or not people like DanS or Floyd believe its a good thing, will not play well in Peoria.
donegal, I would suggest that you pay attention to the primary coverage. Every report I've seen, heard, and read, the number one issue, over all, is jobs.

That's what they will be talking about. But it won't truly affect the voting habits of average Americans. They are more concerned about their jobs and welfare. This is what is truly important to them, and thus the smarter criterion to vote on. Oddly, the only people who really vote based on a candidate's views on gay marriage or abortion are pseudo-intellectuals and the fanatically stupid. |
That is untrue. Studies have shown that the socalled 'working poor', and the unemployed are generally not as participatory in voting for national elections because they think it will not make a difference anyway. Under Clinton for instance the expropriation of the working class continued at an accelerated class.
On the other hand in periods of decreasing wealth-disparity the poor tend to participate more in the political process.
The middle-class people who vote are those who think it important to further curtail the freedom of the American people. Or the people who think it neccesary to counter that. The first are motivated by a wish to administer punishement as a means of protecting their own diminishing incomes, while the latter are those who think that a freer populace will eventually rebel against the present structure.

You may be right that it is the publics perception of outsourcing that matters. Personally, I think most of them are too stupid to understand it, one way or another. A huge chunk of people have already decided who they will vote for, not based on issues, policies, or even beliefs. Most peoples vote is based upon 'eye candy'.
