quote: If this was Mario 3 vs. Wollfenstein3D, I could understand why the votes would be so close. Wolf3D was truly the first, and the greatest FPS. DOOM, OTOH, is just a cheap remake as GePap previously mentioned, with no redeeming value other than it was based directly off of Wolf.
SMB over DOOM any day. |
Exactly what I wanted to say, only you made it sound wayyy more intelligent.
Mario is way better, and has way more playablity. Plus, Mario is still fun. Doom sucks now, that is why it is losing. Maybe in its heyday, when it first came out, it would have won, but it is hard ot kill a legend, and Doom can only kill demons.

Before I had easy web access, there were CDs you could purchase (and lend, and borrow) that had dozens of new levels. I spent literally days just going through one CD, and halfway though got the bright idea of reviewing each level as I did it.
These went from tiny levels with standard graphics (none of which really stand out), to vast levels, to levels with new graphics (like the infamous ALIENS level), to enormous levels with all new graphics (such as the magnificent Death Star level). Others used teleporters in whole new ways -- One I remember used them to create two separate warships in the depths of space, one of which was "boarding" the other (you could look through the viewports of each); another used dozens of one-way teleporters with several "holding pens" of critters that were unreachable, to create a "wandering monster" effect in the level.
Of course there were stinker levels, that were poorly planned and/or broken to the point that they were either insanely difficult or pathetically easy. Alcatraz sticks in my mind as one level that manged to do both, depending on which teleport trap you ran into first.

DOOM and all FPS:s are meant for hyperactive, triggerhappy brats. The same goes for RTS-games.
Mario is just a copy of Giana Sisters though. :P
