Civ got a respectable number in the teens, but this is simply the worst concieved list I have ever seen. Some highlights include Wolfenstein 3D and Simcity both being beaten by Virtua Tennis, a Sega Dreamcast game. Yes, I kid you not, a Dreamcast game.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Half-Life and Doom made 32 and 44, respectively. This puts them far behind Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, which made #20, or the even higher ranked NHL '96.

...and just to show that not all these lists suck, here is a pretty good one:

http://archive.gamespy.com/articles/july01/top50index/

Doom, Half-Life, Warcraft II, and Civilization take top honors. Seems pretty fair to me.

Sorry, but a list with doom at the top isn't a very good list.

Sorry for posting a third time in a row, but I must continue my rant. 5 of their top 6 are Nintendo games. The last one is Tetris. Is that a sign of clear bias or what?

Heretic! Burn him!

Actually I don't care that much about Doom. As long as it's in the top 10 or so the list is OK by me. For some reason, Doom gets most of the credit for being a "historical" game and games like Wolfenstein 3D, Dune 2, Simcity, and others which created genres are ignored. It's not as if Doom was the only game that was around in the early 1990s.

hmmm

including old atari games and current PC games is no easy challenge.

I loved pitfall. But #1? I think not.

I never played master of orioin. Very high rating. Was this game that good?

haven't played ultima underworld either.

Of course. But I'd argue that Doom has become a sort of token classic game for people who don't know much about early PC gaming to put high on their top __ games of all time list.

That's kind of how I feel about Civ and Half-life. No game comes close to approaching those two in greatness.

You might as well kick the Sid Meier games off there and make that your Top 10 RPGs of all time list.

What do you see in half-life? It's just another RTS, exept you don't shoot everything...just mostly everything.

Confusing your three-letter acronyms, Tassi?

I can't really describe what I see in Half-Life as well as I can describe why I love Civ. I think that the great storytelling is part of it, and so is the way the maps were created. However, that's not really a very good explanation.

what can I say. I only play rpg's and civ style games. and maybe a few tactical squad games.

All shooter games become boring after a few hours. I have no motivation or desire to finish them.

I have never played Doom, but I have played Doom2. I wasn't impressed. Never played half-life, but I doubt I would be impressed.

You want storytelling? Go play Deus Ex
You want great maps? Go play System Shock 2

Doom wasn't that good by modern standards, but it deserves its place high on any of these lists as the game which kickstarted a genre which now accounts for more new games than any other.

All bad inclusions pale in significance to the entirely mediocre racing game WaveRace 64, incredibly enough at #33. Was this made in 1999 or something?
