Nice add-ons Trip. You mention two uses of the spearmen, but I think there is a third; namely pillaging.
If you can get on to a mountain chain on your way to an iron resource, that can be a dangerous threat. Of course the enemy can try to cover it but an unit in enemy territory is always nice to have as it ties units up to defend against your 20 shield unit
