I'm really sorry to hear about your mother. Your father needs someone to lean on. Perhaps you can petition the army to extend your leave a bit so you can be with him. Failing that, try to get him some grief counseling. Many churches offer this and support groups gratis.

Mine did when my mum died.

The funeral was kind of a relief - it happened after a long illness. But it took many months, even years, for us all to be able to laugh again.

My aunts never forgave my Dad for remarrying. As I can appreciate the hell he was in, I'm glad he did.

My heart is sad for you - but I have been there, and the pain will grow less so long as you let it out.

Best wishes at a sad time.

Well, my mother was very insistant that she didn't want a funeral nor a memorial. We still wanted to do something though so we had something like an Irish wake. Yesterday, we invited a bunch of friends and family over and then we looked at pictures and talked about things we remembered. It was really nice.

She requested that her body be cremated and when the process is done my father, sister, and I will rent a boat so we can scatter her ashes in the Pacific ocean off of California.

Put an end to popups!

You know, I will think about copying your mum. That sounds altogether better than a traditional church service.

Sounds like a great way to remember her.

So my two weeks of leave will be up tomorrow and I will be heading back to Iraq. I don't want to sound down but I really wish I could stay a bit longer. Last Saturday we finally got my mother's ashes from the crematorium and per her wishes we rented a sail boat and scattered her ashes in the Pacific Ocean off the coast at Point Loma. It was a quiet affair with just my father, sister, aunt (my mother's sister), and myself.

For the last three days I've been trying to shop for a town home here in San Diego. The prices have gotten absolutely unreal; last December I looked around and in most areas the housing prices have shot up 20%-30% in the last SIX MONTHS! The same design in the same complex that was going for $300,000 in December are now going for $400,000 in June.

My father seems to have gotten much better in the last two weeks. I would say he was very shocked initially though.

That's true.

But I wouldn't want to see someone bottle up all thier emotions without actually dealing with them. People can bottle them up now but they will eventually all come out and it usually happens at the worst and unexpected time. I see alot of people "being strong" but then it doesn't work because those buried feelings manifest themselves in other ways that they may not be aware of.

I think the man upstairs gave us all these emotions, even the bad ones, for a reason and we should respect all of them, understand them while they work their way through, instead of trying to chase them away.

Best of thoughts to you and Oerdin.

I just arrived in Baghdad and I'm quite jetlagged. I got bumped twice by United Airlines and I had to change my route so I went to London through San Fransisco instead of Washington DC but everything worked out fine in the end. Damn, it is hot here and I haven't gotten to shower for two days. It's going to take some time to adjust back to this place again.

Oh yeah? My United Flight outta SD to Chicago was delayed an hour and 20 minutes. My connector flight was already boarding when we put down. I had to run the two hundred meter dash with a backpack and a C-bag knocking over people on the people mover. ("It's a people mover, not a people stander, damnit!")

Seriously, glad you made it okay.
