Neve Al, day break
It was shortly after 0600, when everything went quiet. The relentless attacks against FCL troops went on throughout the night suddenly stopped. The Azanis and Nooslanders, they seemed to have withdrawn. Except for the screams of the injured, the smells of oil, high explosives, sweat, and Death, the blown-up buildings, and the burning wreckages, it seemed almost normal. The FCL troops were both puzzled and relieved at the same time. Their nerves were stretched to the breaking point -- and for some, beyond.
Then, slowly, a low humming noise started to reverbrate through the ravaged city. A noise that somehow invoked dread.
There they were, three huge, ungainly, and ponderous shapes cut out ominous shadows against a dawn sky. These shadows were almost like dark voids, portals into nothingness.
If you were at the right place at the right time, you could see a flash. A whoosh sound accompanied the flash, which was drowned out by the enormous bang of a HEAT round exploding against a FCL tank dug in somewhere in the city.
It had begun. The low whooshing sounds were punctuated by the higher tug tug tug of machine cannons. Occasionally, a small boom was producted by a missile hurling itself at several times the speed of sound. On the ground, FCL vehicles were destroyed indiscriminately. From tanks to AFCs to jeeps and even cars and motorcycles. The whole city was continuously rocked by explosions of various sizes.
The three dark shapes of death were almost like dragons of legend, gliding through air while breathing fire upon a hapless village, as the villagers cowered and prayed to their gods, and so did the FCL soldiers. Most of them were hiding behind covers, only a few brave souls dashed forward to help their injured brethren.
After what seemed like infinity, the attack ended. But the nightmare was not yet over. The low humming sound of these planes was soon replaced by another sound, that of a low and slow heartbeat. The sound of rotors.
Attack helos swarmed through the city sky, blasting FCL defense points with missiles and machine cannons. The defenders, many of them conscripts, were so completely stunned that they could only shiver in fear and stare staright ahead.
At long last, even the attack helos left. A nice soothing woman's voice filled the air of the city, beckoning the FCL soldiers to lay down their arms.
"Brave Franklychanland soldiers!" The voice began, "You are fighting an unjust war against the people of Azan, a war that you cannot win. Why are you fighting? You are not fighting to defend your own country, but to satisfy the ambitions of a madman. You are in another country, shooting at the Azani soldiers. You would buy anyone of them a drink if you meet him in a pub, and so would they.
"Brave soldiers of Frankgchanland! It is now time to bring an end to this conflict, so peace can start to heal this wounded land. With peace, you can go home to your parents, to your family, to your loved ones, and to your friends. You have fought with courage, even though your fighting is misguided. You are outnumbered and you are short on supplies. A lot of you are hungry. Many of you are wounded.
"Lay down your weapons. You will be treated humanely. We will tend to your injured, we will feed your hungry.
"Further resistance on your part will only bring more deaths to your side, and it will all be for nought, for you are fighting an unjust war, and unjust wars cannot be won."

Jonchastan Field Command, North of New Aurora, Azan
Lt. Kazemi raised his left fist in salute as he entered the map room. Although there were several computers in the room, the other officers all stood around the detailed map laid out on the table in the centre of the room.
"It looks like we're all here now." said Gen. Yoon Hana, "I believe you know General Maclean, General Azzam and General Mo'okini. Tal Elon and Kimo Kainoa are here in command of the Free Azan Brigades. Lieutenant Kazemi has been attached to the Azani Liberation Army as our liaison. How is Roshem, Hassan?"
"Good, General. Very good, in fact. The city up and running again, and the ALA hold a stable majority in the local Neighbourhood and Workplace Councils. Commandante Gluckstein has been busy building and arming his militias for the push North, and Centralis is about to move on After as we speak."
"What defences does that leave Roshem?" asked General Elon.
"Apart from the 3rd Azani Infantry Division and the fifty thousand or so strong Militia under Gluckstein's command, there's also Guardinia's two divisions and the Nooslandian and Cerooan special forces. Even if the attack fails spectacularly, Roshem's defences are solid."
Gen. Yoon looked at the small figures laid out on the map, then to the faces of each of the generals before continuing.
"Comrades. It is time for us to act. General Elon, the bulk of your volunteers will stay in New Aurora for the time being. I'm not about to leave our backsides exposed just because we're joining the offensive.
"General Kainoa, I want you to pick two brigades - keep them mixed, but I want the FCL heavy - and have on the the transport ships tonight. You'll be meeting up with General Mafti's marines en route. General Mo'okini," she stopped, and gave a half-smile, "Gus. I need the airborne for After. Drop Zone 7B."
Gen. Gustaf "Gus" Mo'okini's expression hardened, but he nodded.
"The Guardinians will be attacking up the highway from the South. Karakas will join them from the West. We'll need someone to cut the supply lines from Tel Zach and prevent the Facists from counter-attacking. Or at least hold them off long enought for our allies to take the city. Colonel Kazemi will be joining you." Gen. Yoon smiled again, warmly this time, "I wanted to tell you before the meeting started, but you didn't exactly give me the chance. The ALA paratroopers insisted
on having you along; they'll be under your personal command.
"The rest of you will be coming North to Ronya with me to our new Field Command Centre in Ronya. When the attack on Tel Zach comes, Jonchastan will be front and center. Are there any questions?"

INS Medway
(Cerooan Third Fleet, off the north-west of Azan)
"Where the hell did those subs come from?" demanded High Admiral Fitzpatrick.
"No idea, sir- they're going after the transports"
"Where the hell is the Sarali, and that Guardninian ship? They are supposed to be guarding the them!"
"The Sarali's damaged, sir!"
The High Admiral looked out of the starboard windows, and could see a plume of smoke rising from the INS Sarali. "Damn it; how many did they get?"
"Two transports sunk, the Sarali was damaged, the radio's buggered- I can't make out what they're saying".
"I can see it, looks like a torpeado to the aft, they're taking water"
"The Saari is closest, they are sending life rafts"
"We're going after those subs, tell the Guradinian fleet to remain here, the Fable and Saari remain too, we're going north"
INS Endeavour
Landeros walked onto the bridge, refreshed from his sleep. "What have we got?"
"Kaimuki"
"Already?"
The city lights seemed really close, only a few kilometers away. Landeros turned to Lieutenant Commander Dixon, "That's close- any sign we've been detected?"
"We're sure they know we're here, sir. The sub pens have remained closed- they must be out"
"No turrets or artillery on the shore?"
"Can't see any, but with all this cloud and rain, they'd have to fire before we could"
"If we take out the sub pens, they would have to divert to Ali'i City..."
"The island's defences would be vastly reduced"
"I want to send our mission objective to the High Admiral---"
code:
Cerooan First Fleet, Mission: Kaimuki
Objective One:
Shore bombardment, attempt to destroy any AA batteries, gun turrets and artillery poisitons.
Carrier will then conduct airstrikes against the subpen.
Objective Two:
Should objective one be fufilled, a contingent of marines will land on the island and air recon will begin to assertain the remaining defenses around the city of Kaimuki. Further strikes will be carried out against military targets where necessary.
Objective Three:
Land and capture Kaimuki. Such an operation will require the majority of the fleets' marines and may require further contingents from the south- possibly paratroopers of the Topaz Guard
Objective Four:
Secure entire island to be used as a launch point for further operations against Frankychanland. Will certainly require more troops- achievable by Ceroo alone, ADU assistance prefered.
Later, INS Endeavour
"Sir, Message from the High Admiral- FCL subs have attacked the third fleet suffering minor losses"
"Solves the mystery of why there was no welcoming"
"The third fleet is coming north".
Landeros' eyes lit up, 'this could win this war, the Cerooans could win this war, that tyrant Frankychan could be overthrown, and soon' he thought. He hesitated, "what about our plan?"
"Approved, sir"
Landeros spun around to face Kaimuki. "Let's do it then..."
The Endeavour's guns rotated towards the shore and fired a salvo, the other lead ships in the fleet did the same. The shoreline lit up as shells landed near the FCL subpens and the base. Intel on Kaimuki was very limited, only three-month old satellite photos from Centralis gave any indication as to where AA batteries could be. The shelling started to move closer to the city- it was not unknown for FCL installations to be in the heart of populated areas. If Ceroo was going to take this island, they should avoid civilian casualties. Another salvo ploughed through the FCL bases' perimeter wall.
The carrier launched prematurely, four ospery fighters headed straight for the subpen. In various areas in Kaimuki bright flashes were seen, screaming across the sky were FCL's surface-to-air missiles, three Ospreys were hit- the explosions illuminating the sky, the fourth managed to dodge the missile attack, and launched a pair of sidewinders at one of the AA batteries, before making a hasty retreat to the carrier.

Kaimuki
The serene beaches of Kaimuki were overrun with landing craft from the Jonchastani/Ceroosian allied forces. Palm trees were crushed underneath the mechanized treads of the Coalition...
-------
Sirens wailed throughout the city, warning the populace that invasion was happening. Citizens out on the streets ran for cover in the nearest building. The military police enforcing martial law ran for cover in the closest buildings, waiting for allied troops to pass...
--------
"How many?" Private Yim leaned over to his comrade who was observing enemy troop movements through his binoculars.
"50 of 'em." Sergeant Blake whispered as he continued to watch the Jonchastani troops through his binocs. "Looks like they got an APC too. Smart bastards, they're using it for cover."
Yim leaned forward to try and get a look at the troops. Off in the distance, he could see a mass of troops headed down the street of Kaimuki towards their position.
FCL troops, what little they had, were strewn about throughout the city in the buildings above the street. A few squads were in the sewers, observing the troops through the gutter openings. The unorganized FCL troops under Sergeant Blake barely had time to grab their weapons when they heard that Coalition forces were landing on the beaches of Kaimuki.
Blake put his binoculars away and turned toward the men in the room with him.
"In about 10 minutes, we're gonna have about 50 Jonchastani troops on our position. I've told the guys in the sewers to wait until we start firing before they open up. Any questions?"
The men assembled shook their heads.
"Good dismissed. Give 'em hell."
Sergeant Blake wondered how the others in the city were faring.
-----
"DIE YOU BASTARDS!!!" Jackson yelled over his gunfire. Private Jackson raked the positions of the Ceroosians taking cover in the small building nearby.
Jackson quickly ducked behind the wall next to him to reload his clip while another FCL soldier using a makeshift barricade in the street snapped off a few shots at the Ceroosian's position.
One of the Ceroosians quickly returned fire and shot the FCL soldier in the head.
Jackson glaned over at his dead comrade and became even more enraged. He knew that throughout the city, FCL soldiers were fighting the Coalition troops just like him......fighting an uphill battle.
We're gonna lose. But at least I can try and take as many of them out as I can.
Jackson rounded the corner and rushed the Ceroosian position, firing his rifle while screaming at the same time.
The last thing Jackson saw was a Ceroosian soldier aiming right at him.

The voice of the woman sounded like a forboding siren song. The squad of FCL soldiers hunkered down in the Azani bank shook their heads.
"Damn, tell that woman to shut up already!" One of the soldiers snickered.
"Maybe she's right, maybe we're fighting for the wrong reasons. Hell, I would definitely buy these Azani's a beer if I met 'em in the bar."
The assembled FCL soldiers turned to look at the lone dissenter talking. Some wore faces of disbelief, while others looked on with concern.
The lone soldier continued...
"Look, why are we even here? The good General said we're here to help the Azani's resist foreign influences, but the Azani's are fighting against us. We're here messing everything up and now we're fighting while bombs, artillery shells, and whatever else explodes around us."
The assembled men hung their heads in thought, some felt ashamed while others merely took in what the lone soldier said.
"That's it, I'm getting out there and surrendering." The soldier said, standing up.
As he headed toward the exit, the squad leader spoke up.
"You're not going anywhere. I don't give a damn about what some crackpot lady says, the General said we gotta fight here so we're gonna fight." The squad leader stood up.
"You're falling for their propaganda and all that psychological warfare bull. Snap out of it."
The lone soldier didn't listen and kept walking toward the exit.
The squad leader unholstered his pistol and aimed it at the lone soldier.
"I'm not going to tell you again. Get back here or I'll execute you right here for treason."
The soldier kept walking and reached to open the exit door.
The squad leader pulled the trigger and the soldier dropped... a gunshot wound to the head.

Ali'i City, Frankychanland Capital
COmmand HQ Bunker
The General paced around the map table of Frankychanland and analyzed the recent events. Jonchastanis and Ceroosians landed on the Kaimuki/Frankychanburg island and apparently had taken Kaimuki.
In the Azani theater, the Nooslanders with scattered Azani freedom fighters were overrunning his forces in Neve Al. The Azani city of After was switfly taken by Coalition forces.
General Frankychan rubbed his eyes as he stared at the map with the different icons showing the combined forces in the FCL/Azani theater.
Surrounding the table on the opposite side of General Frankychan was his staff officers and aides. The General looked up to the assembled men and women and addressed them.
"Ok ladies and gentlemen, we have allied forces on FCL soil. Our attack forces in Azan are systematically being cut off, and it's only a matter of time before they invade the homeland itself. The situation looks dire. I already know what I plan to do, but I want to hear what your suggestions are..."
One female officer stood forward.
"General, I suggest a swift counteroffensive with a combination of FCL and Hive forces. We thrust as far as we can back into Azani territory, then offer a ceasefire. Use the local population as a bargaining tool."
General Frankychan's eyes widened in surprised. The sheer ruthlessness of her plan impressed him.
Another aide stood forward.
"Sir, I suggest we surrender. The only thing we have going for us is the local population of Tal Zach. Withdraw any troops we can afford to shore up our defenses in the homeland."
General Frankychan dismissed the man's proposal.
"Enough. I have a plan that will preserve Frankychanland culture and keep our sovereignty intact. You are all dismissed."
As the staff exited the map room, a communications officer stepped forward toward the General.
"Take this down and send the message to the Coalition."
----------------------
Communication sent to Coalition Forces
The nation of Frankychanland is willing to listen to a proposal for a ceasefire. We know that we are losing this war of liberation for Azan. We now see that the stranglehold foreign nations had on Azan was far greater than the FCL/Hive Union first suspected.
We are willing to negotiate a ceasefire provided that Coalition forces stay out of Frankychanland. Until we receive an answer, hostilites between the FCL/Hive Union and the Coalition will continue unabated.
The great nation of Frankychanland wishes peace between FCL and Azan, as well as the nations of the Coalition. We await your collective response.
-General Frankychan
Supreme Commander of the FCL/Hive Union forces in Azan.

The planes crossed the Border at exactly midnight, flying high to avoid radar. but even still they were detected and in the distance was the sight of many FCL fighter planes. The Squadron of Fighters dived down to meet the FCL fighters and soon dogfights were in place across the sky. The FCL showed they had learnt much quickly and were an even match for the Auldoninna Flyers.
As the Bombers descended towardst their targets the Anti-aircraft batterys opened up and soon the bombers were taking heavy hits.
All morning the airbattles continued. Ground forces in FCL were madly adctivating anything they could point at the sky and then ducking for cover as the Bombs landed .
This was the heaviest bombing raid in the histroy of Apolyton. The loss of flyers from Auldonina was high. But the order had been sent, ' End the War NOW!!" So the citys of Franky Chan were burning tonight.
By mornings early light the surving Auldonina planes returnred to their bases and comamnders began the long process of signing letters to loved ones back home.

The General was disturbed from his sleep, and he rolled over and looked at his aide.
"Wha tis it ?"
"Sir this message jsut in, FCL are asking for a ceasefire!"
"What! . Great news, we can call the raid of then" He reached for his trousers and shirt.
"Umm sir no , its too late , you slept right thru the raid."
"What , I asked to be awaken, you will pay for this, does the PResident know?"
"Not yet sir."
"Well call the Members now... We need to take action"
"Yes sir"

Provisional Command Centre, Neve Al
Colonel Rolando of the 28th Marine, Colonel Wu of the 2nd Armoured Assault, and Colonel Nam of Azani's 211st Irregulars all gathered around a large display screen. Videoconferences were so routine nowadays that nobody noticed them anymore.
The screen flickered to life.
"Good morning comrades," said the image of General Vijinee, "How is the battle coming along?"
"General, the battle is coming along very well. FCL resistances were fewer and lighter than expected. It appears that a lot of the soldiers are conscripts, or perhaps there is a lot of dissention among the ranks. Either way, the main bulk of their garrison has been divided into five pockets of resistance, each one of them are completely surrounded."
"Estimation of strength and casualties?"
"Original strength, roughly a division of regular armoured FCL forces. They had been here for quite some time and were able to construct a good number of fortifications. Fortunately, our Azani insiders had accurate information for us to destroy many of these positions before we started engaging them inside the city. The defenders seem surprised by our attack, which helped us immensely in isolating them into pockets. We were able to capture a large number of FCL soldiers during the initial waves.
"The Rhinos and the attack helos came in earlier this morning destroyed most of their tanks placed in static defense positions. The defenders are little more than a severely understrengthed infantry division with a handful of tanks and APCs. I estimate their strength to be somewhere around a regiment. One and a half, tops.
"Our specical forces managed to either capture or destroy 5 out of 6 of their supply depots. The only one they have left is inside their command post."
"Very good. Colonel Wu, when can the 2nd move out?"
"Sir, we will be completely assembled in 2-3 hours, plus another hour of preparation and we can set out."
"How's the 211st Irregular Colonel Nam?"
"We are down to roughly 2 regiments, but reinforcements filter in from the countryside throughout the night, so we are only down 1/2 a regiment or so.
"In another 8 hours we should be back to full strength."
"Most excellent. Colonel, please move your men into screening positions around the FCL pockets."
"Yes general."
"We'll start moving the Ceroo paratroopers with transport assets from the 111st Airmobile. They will help to helm the FCL'ers in.
"The 28th Marine should stand down for R&R today while waiting for replacements. We will continue to hammer the FCL positions by attack helos and artillery elements of both 3rd Light and 58th Mech."

Rose Tower, Ciudad de Karakas
It was almost lunchtime in Jose Djordjevic and Eric Jensen's weekly meeting.
"Did you hear back from Cam III yet?" asked the President.
Jensen's face lit up. "We have a go. The order is en route now. What we're getting, in the end, is 50 of the Arctic Woodchuck tanks, 15 Ice Breakers, and, my clear favorite, 25 Arctic Avalanches. The Department of the Navy was very disappointed with you, Mr. President. They really wanted one of those Amundsen destroyers."
Djordjevic spread his hands apologetically. "If Congress had approved the defense budget on time, they'd have gotten one." He shrugged slightly. "How soon will they arrive?"
"I know what you're thinking," Jensen replied sadly. "By the time they get here, the war in Azan will probably be over. It's too bad - I think we could have used them."
"I have confidence in you," said Djordjevic. "And I think the public still has confidence in you." He glanced at his watch. "Shall we go to lunch?"
"Yes, let's. KFC?"
"Gotta buy local!" smiled the President.
