Brad Richards gets the Conn Smythe. PEI must be rocking tonight -- only place in Canada that wasn't rooting for the Flames .
EDIT: This has really gotta sting for Ottawa Senators fans. They & the Lightning came into the league in the same year, and despite supposedly being "on the brink" for 2-3 years now, they've just been surpassed by their expansion cousins.

Well, that is good news.
BUT
Tampa Bay? Tampa ****ing Bay? The Stanley Cup is won by a team based in ****ing Florida?!
Maybe the NHL does need to take some time off.
If anyone can give me a good reason not to beat my own head in with my hockey stick, fire away.

^ One reason and one alone: Dave Andreychuk. How can you beat your head in at watching a guy who's toiled in the league for 22 years finally get his Cup?

Because it is Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay! Hockey!
Have we entered an alternate universe or something?

And the joy seeped out of Mudville.
Congrats to Tampa, they did have the talent. What a great, young team. Odds are this will not be the last.

^ Hey, they've been here since 92-93. You wanna rage about it now, go ahead -- you can't blame Bettman for this one, though, it was Ziegler who awarded those franchises.
There are actually more Canadian players on the Lightning roster than the Flames roster, even.

Congrats Lightning!
Flames gave a good effort, but the better team definitely won tonight.
As has been said already: how can one not be happy for guys like Andreychuk, Lecavalier, Richards, and especially St. Louis? The little guy that could... It was great seeing him hoist the cup.
Even the role-players on Tampa proved, at least to me, that they had the chops to contribute to a win. They weren't being carried by the big guns; guys like Cibak, Clymer, and Dingman contributed game in, game out.
So: Congrats.

Congrats to Tampa.
Calgary showed up for the last 10 minutes - not good enough. It's a bloody shame too because they totally outplayed Tampa for so much of the series. My heart ached game after game when 'Bulin left all those rebounds...and their was hardly ever a Flame on the doorstep to clean up the garbage.
Old guy wins - okay nice, but I don't really care. Richards/St. Louis/Fedotenko were more deserving.
I disagree with the thought that there is more in store for this team. Winning so young does strange things - 50% of them will be ruined by this and never get better or in fact decline.

Fedotenko, yes. Bashed up to high hell, but basically is The Show, offensively, in game 7.

Anyone know what's going on in Calgary? I hope it doesn't get ugly like Vancouver in '94.

King Sutter said it wasn't a goal.
Hence, a non-goal it was.

^ Oh, come on, Asher. Did you watch the ABC feed tonight? They did a computer reconstruction of the shot based on the one replay they had, and concluded it was about 3/4 of the way across the line, but not all the way over. All it takes is a couple inches of elevation to change where that puck ultimately was and still look like it was in from that angle.
You wanna *****, ***** about the fact that the Flames played like crap for 50 minutes and Iginla completely ran out of gas in games 6 & 7.
And Sava, if you think this year's playoffs were worse than last year's, I gotta ask if you wear glasses -- if so, check the prescription; if not, get them. That game 7, at least the last ten minutes, was way better than the snooze-fest that was last year's NJ/Anaheim game 7, and never mind the rest of the playoffs. Unless you actually like Minnesota/Anaheim-style series, that is, in which case there's just no hope for ya .

This was one of the best playoffs that I've ever seen, hands-down.
Beats the crap out of the preceding 8 years of NewJersey-Detroit-Colorado-Dallas-repeat bullcrap.
And to be fair to Iggy: he didn't ENTIRELY run out of gas... he just wasn't hitting quite the hits he did earlier, in part due to fatigue, but also due to Tampa's tightening D. He still had a few great plays in the last 120 minutes.

Don't insult your team by turning this into a petty whine-fest.
It wasn't conclusively a goal, the ref called nothing: hence, it was not a goal.
Would you like the NHL to reverse its call, even though it was correct, and give the Cup to Calgary?
'Cause I assure you, they would not accept it. No one wants to win on a technicality. But we don't have to worry about that, because, hey, it was not a goal.
Congrats to Calgary on a great season, even though they came up in short in the end... fair and square.

Sutter will get his wrist slapped now that it is over.
The officials were between a rock and hard place with those two teams. A highly skilled, puck carrying team vs. a grinding, dump and chase forechecking team. If you call a low amount of penalties, you benefit the Flames, and old-fashioned hockey fans love you for "letting them play". If you call more penalties, you benefit Tampa, and the segment of fans aching for more skill, no fighting (clutching, grabbing), etc. love you.

Andreychuk contributed leadership to his team while playing hard-nosed hockey night-in and night-out.
Sitting on the puck, giving yourself an edge in faceoffs, working guys hard into the boards, finishing checks... that's the type of inglorious, ugly hockey that Dave excels at. Just because he doesn't have the flash of a Vinny or a St. Louis, doesn't mean he didn't contribute.

I'm happier that stellar players like Richards got the goal, Andreychuk draws my pity and anger that he lucked out. |
As a rule, I'm not a fan of veterans past their prime, but that's not really fair. What he provided was veteran leadership - which is not quantifiable in a box score. Without his calming presence they likely would not have gotten there.
