Another thing that should be mentioned: The Zens come with a user-removable battery. That means it's possible to buy secondary batteries for long trips, or replace it later when the battery doesn't hold its charge as long as it used to. As you may recall, this is a bigissue with the iPod these days...

You can't honestly look at the overwhelming trend, the increased number of big-name competitors, and the slim lead Apple had the last time the market was surveyed and still think the iTunes Music Store is going to stay #1 for the forseeable future. Either way, it doesn't matter. How important is it if the #1 has a minority of marketshare, which is declining?

Enter the AD-FREE zone

This whole "iTunes is #1" thing is nonsense, anyway.

The market for downloadable music can be looked at as follows:
1. Apple proprietary
2. WMA

Apple proprietary (iTunes) has 35%, while WMA has 65%. That's the important figure, since it doesn't matter which store you buy from when you're looking at the player...

Time will tell. Creative better get these new players out quick if they want to piss all over Apple, though; it looks like new iPods with 60GB of hard drive space are coming around September.

How many here have pre-ordered it (or is about to), or are considering buying it shortly after release?

I haven't preordered it because I hope to get it from some shop closer, like Amazon.co.uk or maybe even a local shop... but only if they have it at the same price, and gets it ASAP...
At present time I'm 95% sure that I'm going to buy this...

Seeing as the iPod and the Zen use the same harddrive, that would be coming soon to the Zen, too.

IGN speculates, based on Creative's history, that 40GB and 60GB versions will be quietly launched a few weeks after this one starts shipping, in a few weeks.

Looking at the price difference, I don't think it's important that Apple will have a 60GB version. It'll probably cost $999...

Wouldn't setting the iPod's syncing to manual avoid that problem? I'm curious, as my friend got an iPod and has been using my computer to manage it while his computer is in the shop. Don't want his iPod to get erased once when he switches back over to his computer.

It sounds like you had the iPod set to automatically sync with the iTunes playlist; that's why it opened up iTunes and emptied your friends iPod to match the empty iTunes playlist. I'm pretty sure that wouldn't have happened if you had set the iPod to manually update only.

Edit: To Drake Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I don't think that's the point. Even an automatic update should know better, or at least prompt a confirmation saying "Synchronising will cause the deletion of X files on the iPod. Do you wish to continue?"

This is extremely basic human-computer interface 101 stuff, and I thought this was Apple's forte.

Automatic syncing is hella convenient 99% of the time. I'm having trouble even thinking of a situation where I would be in danger of accidentally erasing the files on my iPod. And even if I do, it takes like 15 minutes hooked up to my computer to refill it.

I'm sure he doesn't have a problem with autosync, because it is definintely useful for me.

The problem is with autosync being braindead, enough to cause you to lose files in a situation that's hardly obscure...if you're going to be deleting user's files, you always ask for confirmation. It's a basic, fundamental rule.

autosyncing is convenient. we'd done a fresh reformat/reinstall, though, so there was no music on his computer at all--his whole collection was on the ipod.

which is why we were both quite miffed when we realized what was happening.

The autosync I use tells me "X files will be added, X files will be removed from your Nomad Zen. Do you wish to continue"? Yes/No/Customize.

Similarly for adding/deleting from the PC.

Most users already made a concious choice to delete that file by erasing it from their iTunes playlist. Why would it be intelligent to make them confirm it again during what is supposed to be a quick and hassle-free autosync?
