no mp3 backups. he did have a lot of the cds, and much of his music on other people's computers over the dorm LAN, but nobody had his blues collection.

the question still remains in my mind, though: would the zen do that?

So make it an option -- "do not ask me again".

And why? Because it doesn't even send the files to the trash can, it DELETES them. What if you hook your iPod up to your friends computer to transfer a song to it? What if your harddrive is reformatted and you connect your iPod to it?

The thing may be quick and hassle-free, but a simple confirmation dialog is trivial and can save a LOT of trouble. It's a simple, fundamental design decision.

If you're not going to ask, at least put the deleted files into the Trash so they can be recovered.

The simple answer to 'why is it intelligent to ask' is because not-asking results in unexpected behavior and the irrecoverable loss of data. Hell, if these were purchased songs, they'd lose their licenses, too...

By the way, deleting a file from a playlist in iTunes deletes the song? That makes no sense whatsoever.

A playlist is a list of things to be played. Deleting it from the list should not delete the file.

A playlist is akin to what a DJ might have for a radio station, a list of songs he wants to play. When he removes one from the list, it doesn't mean he goes into the back room and snaps the CD in two...

If it behaves differently than this, it should not be called a playlist. Call it the media library or something.

I'm going to agree with Asher here... that makes no sense...
This would be the same as if you deletes a song from the WinAmp playlist, and it automaticly deletes the song from the computer

It's not semantics.

You said the user makes a "concious" choice to delete the file when he deletes it from the playlist. Clearly this is not the case, with the vast majority of people here saying that is not the expected behavior.

That's not a semantic argument, it's a valid argument, and one that completely shut you down.

I just had a look at one of those iPods, but wouldn't call them better looking as the Zen Touch... IMHO I'd say the iPod was actually more ugly...

And they got rid of a lot of buttons to reduce cost, as a "feature". Now you can do the same thing via an array of actions on the little touchwheel thing ...

They're also slowly trying to catch up to the Zen's featureset: They added the ability to slow down or speed up songs, boosted the battery life to 12 hours (only slightly less than the first Zen in early 2002...), and ability to fully edit playlists "on the fly".

Soon it'll be adding a more powerful equalizer and environmental effects... Give it a few more years.

Hell, maybe by 2010 they'll put in a high-quality DSP and DAC.
