No, the ICRC are the ones holding themselves as the paragons of virtue and morality above the lesser peoples who merely put their lives on the line to depose the abusive dictator instead of making excuses why nothing can be done.

If they want to change their mission, then they should be prepared to lose the credibility and privelege they've gained through scrupulously fulfilling their original mission.

I don't see the problem at all.

The day the Red Cross stops standing up for the rights of the detained will be a defeat for humanity.

Even examples like Saddam. If we use his methods, we lower ourselves to his level.

In Geneva, the chief spokeswoman of the international Red Cross, Antonella Notari, said the organization was not calling for Saddam's release but simply stating the rules under international law. "We're not making any ultimatums or calls for release," Notari said. "What we're saying is: Saddam Hussein, as far as we understand today, is a POW, prisoner of war, protected by the third Geneva Convention as all prisoners of war are. "In theory, when a war ends and when an occupation ends, the detaining force has to release prisoners of war or civilian detainees if there are no reasons for holding them," she said. Will the new Iraqi regime have the death penalty? Much as I'd like to be against in all circumstances, I've never got to see a mass murderer fry, and it would be quite an experience.
