Chapter 12 – Revolution revived

The conspirators that brought about the downfall of Robespierre and Danton and the end of the Reign of Terror met again in utmost secrecy, very early in the morning before the session of the National Assembly in the hospital of Bicêtre where Guillotin was employed. Mirabeau spoke first.
“Now that this wretched Necker is dead, we can overthrow the tyrant King Louis XVIII and appoint a new revolutionary government.”
Desmoulins replied.
“Yes. Although we do not oppose the monarchy, the erratic behaviour King Louis has displayed and the arbitrary decisions he has made in the course of just one day clearly show that he poses the greatest danger to our revolution and to everything we’ve accomplished so far.”
Guillotin concluded.
“Then let’s charge him with breaking the constitution, remove him from his office and try him as a traitor. In addition to this I suggest we don’t reinstate the Committee of Public Safety, but form a new body called the Directory instead with us being the three directors.”

Mirabeau and Desmoulins agreed and the three of them headed to the National Assembly.
There a heated discussion ensued which resulted in the removal of King Louis by a majority of just 23 votes out of 749 representatives. His death sentence was adopted with an even thinner majority of only 14 votes. The issue of the introduction of the Directorate received a much higher majority of 156 votes.

King Louis was dragged out of his bed straight to the Bastille. There, he received his last meal, a thin slice of toasted bread with butter and a cup of stale water, quite unlike the cakes and champagne he used to consume while he was spending the days in idle self-indulgence at the court. Immediately after that, the former King was taken to Place de la Révolution for execution. The crowd was so huge it seemed entire Paris had flocked to the square. The restless crowd started to shout.
“Death to the tyrant!”
“Long live the revolution!”
“Death to the King!”
“Death to the traitor!”

Mirabeau was irritated.
“This is a good example of the irrational behaviour of the mob. Yesterday the same people were shouting Long live the King and listen to them now.”
Desmoulins replied.
“That is why the people need their directors to rule them and to guide them.”

At that moment King Louis expressed the wish to speak.
“It is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known”, were his last words before the sharp blade of the guillotine beheaded former King Kalius.

A few hours later Duc de Bordeaux was crowned as Charles X.

********

In the evening that day everybody came to the Tuileries Palace to a dinner in honour of the coronation of Charles X.
After the dinner everybody left home, or so it seemed.
For the next morning the guards were shocked to discover Adagio lying face down on the floor of his bedroom, completely naked, gagged, his arms tied to the bed, his legs tied together, covered with blood, apparently flogged to death.

The directors were quickly summoned.
“Hmm, the murderer is probably someone who was at the dinner last night”, Mirabeau observed.
“Then it’s one of us. One of the directors”, Desmoulins replied.
“But which one?”

In the meantime, Guillotin was examining the body.
“Hmm, very strange. It doesn’t look like the usual weapon the killer was using. Something seems backwards, since it looks like a club was used to flog the person this time.”
“A club? Was it the murder weapon in any of the earlier murders?” asked Desmoulins.
“I don’t know for sure. I didn’t rule out some sort of a club, but this time I’m certain. It’s a club.”

Mirabeau spoke to the other two.
“Well I think it’s time to exercise our new powers for the first time. Let’s have a meeting of the Directory tomorrow to decide how to proceed.”

I would never have predicted any of them making it to the final three.

Loinburger the "it's-either-me-or-Smiley" Jacobin, Smiley the "other" Jacobin, or "under the radar" Rah. Tough call.

Raz was the luckiest man because he was on the top of rah's list trice and all three times he was pushed back because of the events in the thread (Theben voting for rah, then vovan voting for rah, then Guynemer being innocent).

The fourth time his luck just ran out. And it coincided with his vote for rah.

With the amount of clues against me. (and yes, they're much easier to spot when you know they're pointing at you), I can't believe I survived.

The biggest clue (some will say obscure) was my method of killing. Flog, or as pointed out in the last clue, backwards spells GOLF. I even flogged with a stick (nickname for golf clubs) instead of a cat-o-nine-tails to draw attention to it. And in the final kill used a club in an attempt to make it even more obvious. After the last game where I kept specifying to Hong Hu, that I didn't play tennis, just golf, I figured this clue would be a give away.

I'm sure our GM will enjoy detailing all the other clues. It will be a long list. But I will thank him for one specific red herring that he put out there after the weasel clue. Which I thought would be the end of me, especially after it was pointed out.

And come on, one of the clues was a card with my name on it.

But yes it's much easier when you know the answer already.

Yes, thanks for all the clues pointing at Ben.
It allowed me to wack him before he did it to me by accident. In multiple Mafias games, it's very important to find the other and eliminate him, (but not too early). It's usually easier since you know the clues pointing at yourself so you are left with those pointing at the other and a few red herrings. Much less confusing.

Okay, I definitely want to see the list of clues. The rats & weasals eating the body is a cute touch, but what would Guilotin be doing with an expensive jade statue? And what would he be interested in from the museum? (Not to mention that I, and I suspect others, had no clue that rah liked to golf, and even if I did, I doubt I would have connected a club beating to golf). Guiltoin, the humane executioner, also slightly throws me as being the sadist (since if you look back, I said earlier that he was one of the few who I considered who couldn't possibly have done it).

gjramsey: Yeah, by all rights you should have died before you were able to kill Napoleon, but I was busy being distracted defending myself rather than putting the pieces together about the rhombus frame. Excellent clues there, -tko. For that matter, the whole game has been excellent- the French Revolution is a wonderful setting for a Mafia game. It worked out halfway historically, too, with incorruptible Robespierre offing most of the people early on before getting the guillotine himself.

Anyway, all hail Emperor Guilotin.
That Directorate sure didn't last long.

And yes, and assist to Snow for helping me uncover my counterpart. When I switched my kill orders to move him to the top, Ljube-ljcvetko immediately PM'ed be to ask what had given him away.

And I think you would be surprised at how many people know golf is my passion. Especially after the last mafia game. And while the "club" part wasn't enough. "backwards flog" and club should have been quite obviously seen as a golf club. But I did discuss this clue with Ljube-ljcvetko to see how obvious he thought it was. It was to be the last clue, so I wanted to draw attention to it, but not too obvioius. Not like a card with my name on it.
He did a great job with ALL the clues (as you will see later) He and I had some fun conversations down the stretch. This was much better than the last time I was the mafia.
I may be biased , but Ljube-ljcvetko was an excellent GM.

I have to admit that -tko did a great job as GM, including picking the setting.
And both Ming and rah have stated many times that they love golf. I stopped paying close attention after I was dead, but I can't believe I missed that 'flog' clue.

Chapter 13 – Vive l’Empereur

The directory met a few hours later. Guillotin and Desmoulins voted the third director off and condemned him to guillotine. Smiley was executed only half an hour later.

Then Guillotin discussed the Jacobin card found underneath one of the victims.
“After careful reconstruction work, I have managed to recover the name on the card”, Guillotin said.
“So, whose card was it? Mirabeau’s?”
“See for yourself.”

And Guillotin passed the card to Desmoulins and the card bore the name Philippe-François-Nazaire Fabre d'Églantine.
“So it was vovan’s card. No wonder we found it next to his body. It wasn’t a clue after all Damn!”
Guillotin replied.
“I think we got the sadist regardless. I never trusted Mirabeau anyway.”

*********

In the evening Guillotin invited Desmoulins to visit him at the hospital of Bicêtre. Guillotin has just perfected a new design of his device so he wanted to show Desmoulins the test run he was planning to perform on the bodies in the hospital. Desmoulins came, but Guillotin seemed to have left. He looked around for a couple of minutes and just as he was about to leave, Guillotin stepped before him and quickly swung his golf club and knocked Desmoulins out.

When Desmoulins regained consciousness, he noticed his arms and legs were tied rendering him completely immovable, but his mouth wasn’t gagged. He was completely naked. Guillotin prepared his golf club.
“What are you doing? Let me go!”
“I will. I’ll let you go straight to hell.”

And Guillotin started to beat Desmoulins heavily. Desmoulins was screaming and begging, but that didn’t deter Guillotin. He kept flogging loinburger until he was dead. Then Guillotin tested his device on Desmoulins’ body and later that night disposed of it.

*********

Several months later Guillotin became Emperor of France.
