I'm not sure... we may have figured it out eventually anyway, especially those of us with Forgotten Realms books laying around.
I think the balance is, on the whole, tilted towards the assassin, but only if the clues are too opaque. In the first game, I think I played it well, then got some luck at the end. Who knows what would have happened in the second game, but I think as a result of cracking the code early, the clues in the third game were definitely more difficult to follow (DarkCloud would have to verify that one, but it's my impression anyway).
I think once we get settled into the secret ballot game, the villagers will have a much better chance of finding the clues, as there is less incentive to dogpile. If you notice, piling still happens in Assassins, but it much more subtle and far less certain than in Mafia.
Yes, the Assassins are winning 2-1, but it's too soon to tell if there's a pattern yet. (it could mean 2:1 odds, but it's also possible that the games end up alternating between assassins and villagers).
