But if that happens in Alaska wont it melt lots of ice, thus causing fresh water to enter the 'atlantic conveyor' thingie and bringing about the end of western civillisation as depicted in the movie 'The Day After Tomorow' - surely a bit of an overaction for dealing with one bully drunk?

I'm originally from a smaller place too where I spent some years younger, so I have a feeling what's going on here.
first of all, if there's no weapons involved, that's good. It means you're safe most likely and it won't go to bad bad situations. You say there are a few of them and you might be alone in that situation. If that is the case, do not go down I repeat, do NOT go down. His friends are likely to join in at that point. It sounds like a tough proposal for me to make here, but trust me streetfights are universal and know no nationalities or countries. I've seen guys taking a beating standing up and I've seen guys going down because they wanted to go down or because they couldn't stay up, and they end up worse. So stay up! Unless they believe in fair fights, which means when you're down, they leave you alone and call it quits. But that's unlikely to happen. It's the streets, do not trust anything, protect yourself.
Since they know you and everyone kind of knows each other, it's likely not to be the worst beating of the year in case you will have the worse part of it, so it's not too bad. Could be a lot worse.
You should accept mentally, that there is a day when you have to step up for yourself. It might not be with these guys, but it's likely to happen anyway. When you accept that, you get rid of some of that anxiety and fear you have against these guys. Accept the fact, that they might attack you, even if you don't want to. It's not up to you anymore if they do that. Don't show them any fear. You can and should try to talk yourself out, but don't go begging. They want to humiliate you if they start with talks like get on your knees and stuff like that. It'll end up in a fight anyway. They want that, because they get kicks out of it. So you can always talk, but keep it short enough and clear. Don't be too much of a pushover. They see that you'll be easy to toss around and most likely proceed with the attack. It's your own hopes that yells you maybe they will let you be alone if you obey. Won't happen.
So accept the fact that there might be a day when you have to throw down. You don't have to start anything, but if someone set the date on you, at least you already know you will defend yourself and makes it easier mentally.
If you're making any game plans how you would start fighting, go ahead, but it's likely to fly out of window the first move someone makes. You should keep it as simple as possible.
If you have to think 2 things, let them be: 1) Yes I will defend myself if the time comes and 2) No I will not go down to the ground.
Now we can go to the more advanced things you should know about situations like this might be:
First of all, it's a streetfight. ANYTHING GOES. Be nasty and fast, shock value is usually good. However, thinking of your location, you might not want to hurt your opponents too much. Because you'll live another day to see them. But defend yourself with every mean necessary.
The most important thing is to face everyone. If you think his friends will help him, you must face them, and not have anyone in your backside. You can do this by moving yourself to a position where you face them. You don't want anyone hitting you from behind. If you notice someone sneaking to your back, run forward the direction you're facing pass the guy you're facing or start circling so no one is behind you. If you can't help it, try to find a spot where no one can sneak you from behind like a big trash can or something.
You have to see their hands. Do they carry anything extra? If they do, you want to see that and know that. Someone carries a knife? Good to know, RUN!!! A broken bottle? RUN!!!! You want to see the hands. Don't let anyone sneak a weapon in.
If they're drunk, actuall they can be sober too if they don't know how to fight really, they'll be throwing those big hooks and haymakers. It looks wild but it's good for you. They are easy to dodge or block. The range of such punch is surprisingly small. While straight punches, the fist follows the face for a time, in haymakers they just go wildly and if they don't connect at the certain point, they never will. I wish I could show this to you in action so you would see it yourself.
Because I assume you have no experience in fighting, I wouldn't go too technical, just keep a tight package, eyes open. Don't be afraid of getting hit. Yeah it sucks and might even hurt a little, but it's a punch, not the end of the world. Who knows, might make you even more man looking!
The next most likely used attacks on you would be any kind of grabbing and tossing, kicks, some kind of drunk wrestling. Kicking you shouldn't be worried about. It's not effective unless the opponent is trained in it, or unless you're on the ground, but you are not going there as we already decided.
If they're drunk, hey let them kick, they won't have any power in them plus they're in bad balance. I wouldn't worry about this option. Then grabbing and tossing, this is likely to happen. This way a bigger guy tries to muscle you around. I'd advice you to just go with the instinct as there's no time to cover this area. Just don't go down. If you go down, try to get up as your only goal. Just stand up! if he's on top of you, **** it, GET UP! Because you have no ground game, you can't hurt him from this position but he can hurt you even if he is drunk. So stand up.
Remember, if he is grabbing you, he hands are grabbing you and his face is open for shots. In short distance elbows are always good. Don't hold back. But if you can't create any power to those elbows, go with the punches.
Just keep it simple. Don't go down, defend yourself. Keep it tight, throw punches. If the situation looks like it will be a wild one, move a little, keep your hands up(!!!!!!!!!) and look for an opening. The dude is wild, there WILL be an opening. And when it comes, go full power attack mode. Move a little, keep your hands up, keep your eyes open at all times, the guy throws something stupid, step in, go wild.
If the situation looks really bad which I don't expect it to look, a situation where you think you will be SERIOUSLY injured, fish hook, eyegouge, kick the balls. You go down? Fine, go wild, takes his ears and grab them hard and rip'em. Something wild. But I wouldn't expect it to go here.
So remember, keep your eyes open, your hands up and if it's a fight, don't hesitate to strike when there are openings. And be prepared mentally. You will be OK, don't be afraid. If you have money and time and interest, go to a gym and learn this stuff. You can be efficient in few months comparing to not knowing the stuff. It helps you with the nasty vibes too, you'll get confidence and it shows, they'll likely leave you alone. So if you have that option, do that.
Don't let the adrenaline freeze you up. Put your hands up!

I would have already but there's not a martial arts school up here.

Crazy beats big, most times, but not every time.
Since you said everyone knows everyone all you need is a reputation. You can earn it the way KrazyHorse proposed, but that is crazy enough to earn you nationwide admiration, so you can probably get away with something less drastic.
Fighting is not the only way to earn a reputation, remember that young Jedi.

I agree partially with UR. I don't agree that drunks don't feel pain and are hard to fight. I think it's the opposite.
However, you say this guy is a lot bigger than you. You don't want to go to the ground with him, so standing up with a bigger guy when you have no experience might not be a key to victory here. If we want to play it safe and sure, it's a bit risky. Plus the fact that there might be his friends... I advice you to stay away at least until you get your ass to somekind of place where they teach you to do this stuff. You want to learn striking. Kickboxing, anything.
however, you shouldn't think that you need to do that because this guy is calling you out.. I mean, if you don't like to go to the gym, it's fine. Odds are it won't help you much anyway if the confrontation is near.
You say he's calling you out. That means you have a choice. If you decide to meet this guy, do not let it happen on his grounds. He calls you out, you call the rules. Or at least part of them. Do not go and fight him alone if his friends are there. IT's understandable and doesn't make you any less of a man, it only makes you smart. No one expects in their right minds for you to do that. You don't have to be a martyr.
So what you need to do if you decide to make this happen is that you meet on neutral grounds, or your grounds. That means if he brings friends, you bring friends. If you go at it, you go at a place that is neutral or benefits you. You don't go to their block to do it. Simple. If his friends attacks you, your friends protects you, and at least it'll be fair in some sense.
But what ever you do, don't get hot headed and accept a fight with is rules. And most importantly this is because.. there really are no rules, so you can't trust them. So you just make sure you have equalisers with you.
And if they don't agree to the terms, then say it's off and you don't want to fight them because they're pussies anyway wanting it to happen on their terms. You're smaller anyway and to my knowledhge didn't do anything to make this happen, so it's them who are the losers. BUt if they do agree to YOUR carefully thought terms, then you can't back down anymore, so make sure youj make good terms and hold on to them. After all, they're getting ALL the benefits here..
.. and if you can avoid the whole situation, just do that. If you can avoid fighting this man, please do that. I don't believe this could cost you any huge problems, but you never know plus it only gains you little when it can cost you more. You're not a sissy for njot taking the fight, because the guy is bigger and if he don't agree to YOUR terms, he's the sissy.

Well maybe that's not the best advise, sorry. Generally I find it much easier giving advise to big guys out to beat up little guys. At least that way my advise is less likely to get them killed. Unfortunately if you don't have some real training much of the help you've been given is going to either get you beat up or thrown in jail for shooting some *******.
Not worth it.
