BK,
In answer to that, you MUST focus on balance. When I had my wife try the hip throw I described, it surprised m e how differently she had to do it, but I have almost double her body weight.
For example, what for me was stepping in and rotating my body required her to bend her torso to pull me off balance effectively. I didn't expect this. However, Space will have one big advantage - his opponent is hopefully drunk. That means while he gets a certain immunity to pain, he is already off balance.
Space, sorry 'bout the advice. I forgot, you are in a small, ISOLATED town and public intoxication is not something that will get your butt thrown in jail. I neglected the isolated context.
Given your situation I almost agree with Pax. Except don't instigate, but if you can tell this is one of the agressive jerks with whom a fight is inevitable, and he's drunk, let him start it - in front of witnesses besides his buddies. That way you are standing up but not starting it. My life changed in seventh grade bacause of that, my father had kept stressing "Turn the Other Cheek" and I had done it for six years at the school. I was known as an easy target, and also known as studious and, even though the didn't have the term, a geek.
Life on the playground was hell, with low-level casual physical violence (isolated kicks, punches on a routine basis). My growth finally kicked in (I was small) and I got a book on Judo, and practiced with my brother God bless him (why I know about the falling bit). Both standing up for myself and even better yet, winning (I berserked, but that was after "winning" the fight and getting jumped from behind a second time) people decided I was better left alone, and moved on to new prey. My next six years weren't too bad.
