yeah I mean the whole point of this is you know, he is bigger and you don't have any experience. By this I mean, yes anyone knwos how to punch but you know you have to make the odds work for you.

Now that I've been thinking of your situation even more, I'd suggest you duck this challenge if you get a good chance doing so. Other option is to get your friends to back you up, meaning you'll make it a group thing. Then you're not alone, however it will be messy then so maybe not worth it.

How old are you? I mean.. I'd understand if this was like a dispute between 15 year olds but you're older than that I'm sure. It's difficult to tell but I assume you have not done anything to this guy, or anything wrong, he just don't simply like you. That's a BS reason anyway for a fight after you've passed the 15 year age limit. That's like super juvenile. But I know the small place thing so yeah it happens..

My last advice for now is not to take too much info and mix your head with it. You need a clear head what ever happens. Just don't go down, that's it if you need only one advice.

You already have moral victory over them if you have done them nothing wrong. Why would a big guy start this smack talk to you, evben more so when you don't have a reputation of being in fights? It sounds really stupid so the guy is a jerk for sure and you're on the good side by default.

And like few people said, if you feel like it, you don't have to fight. But put things on perspective and think, it might be worth a fight, it depends on lot of things we don't know about your place or people. But if you fight, then FIGHT. Don't do any slapping games, you gotta throw down like a mother****er! Keep your head up, no one can tell you what to do. You're the man! That's right, you're THE man!

"Well maybe that's not the best advise, sorry. Generally I find it much easier giving advise to big guys out to beat up little guys. At least that way my advise is less likely to get them killed. Unfortunately if you don't have some real training much of the help you've been given is going to either get you beat up or thrown in jail for shooting some *******. "

YOU'RE the ******* if you advise a big guy to beat up a little guy.

If I could offer a bit of advice here.....

Most of the advice thus far seems to be either about getting a gun, or some other deadly weapon, or else trying to duke it out. But I think there are problems with both.

The problem with a gun is the very great liability involved. Even if your state is pretty free about letting it's citizens have guns, they usually are not too free about letting it's citizens shoot other people with them. Typically the legal standard for lethal self defense is that you must be able to prove that you were in imminent danger of death or severe bodily harm. Well, the way I see it by the time you could prove that legally it may already be too late. Also, depending on jurisdiction, if it in anyway seems you could have provoked the attack against you(which a jury could interpert as standing up to his taunts if they so chose) I wouldn't want to take the chance of being thrown in prison for the rest of my life.

The problem with fighting is of course you might lose well. As people have already alluded, if he is bigger and he has more experience fighting, odds are not in your favor, and it probably would take a good bit of training to adequately defend yourself. Even then, if he has a weapon he pulls out during the fight you are in trouble. And if he were to win the fight, it's not like in elementary school, adults can do real serious damage. You could end up in the hospital; would if for instance he pounds on your back after you are down, damages your spinal cord, and paralyzes you? or if he decides to stomp on your face, knocking your nose bone down into your brain and killing you? There is alot of risk in going into the fight.

I made a thread earlier on non-lethal weapons, and I think these make a pretty good solution for self defense. You can get some pretty good non-lethal weapondry, such as pepper spray, air tasers, or stun guns. These are all good in that they give you a means of defeating/disabling the other person or at least giving yourself a pretty big advantage. In addition to being effective, they also typically do not cause long-term damage, making it less likely you will be prosecuted or sued. These weapons also wouldn't require years of training like martial arts would.

The main disadvantage is that some people would probably view you as a sissy for using such weapons, but hopefully your friends would not be that type to judge you for doing so.

First, I agree. Avoid the fight as long as you can while preventing "prey" designation, i.e. weak dweeb. Once you are designated prey, it never stops. Once the fight starts, three pieces of advice - I wrestled fairly successfully in high school, and have some limited experience with Judo and Aikido - just enough to get myself in trouble.

If he's that much bigger, even if you have experience, wrestling is generally a bad move. If he grapples with you it's generally a good way to get the crap beaten out of you. I won't close with a guy who is substantially larger than I am.

The hip toss is good (Judo is designed to let little guys toss bigger ones about, and drunks are inherently off balance), but DON'T go for the neck. If you oops and he turns it into a grapple, you are SOL. Instead, as he grabs for you (PRACTICE THIS WITH YOUR FRIENDS FIRST - in fact, go to some judo sites and start practicing many of the moves, wrist locks are very useful too).

1. Grab the wrist with the same side hand (his right, your left) while rotating you body so you end up with your butt against his same hip to the same side as the wrist you have gripped, not quite straight on.
2. Pull his wrist that you have onto your chest while rotating his arm so his hand is basically thumb to your chest. While doing this hooking your other arm's inner elbow into the innner elbow of the rotated arm against your chest. Shove your butt into his hip, he is now off balance.
3. Keeping the palm of his hand against your chest, roughly at the sternum, continue rotating your body, bending at the waist. The arm that is hooked elbow-elbow in his arm provides the force, while the hand holding his wrist keeps the arm weak due rotation. Your hip becomes a pivot point, as does the your outside leg (same side as the hooking arm). He rotates around and hits the ground.

Caveat. This is a CONTINUOUS motion, if you make it three steps as I've described, he'll grab you instead and have YOU at the disadvantage.

2. If any of these throws fail and you get grappled, or you end up closing, BITE. A friend did that in DC while in high school (similar situation), it's very effective. You are clamping down and using your neck, you want to get the muscle between your teeth. It's nasty, septic, and may cause him to try to knock your teeth in afterwards. TANSTAAFL. He almost all WILL let you go if you have an arm muscle, and may in shock let you go anyway.

Third, and I've mentioned this in a similar thread. Throw something, a pool ball, books, something heavy etc. at his crotch. The vast majority of men will flinch. Then throw a punch into his throat. If he has a big, beefy throat you may have to use extending fingers to get past all the fat/muscle, and you will most likely break some. If you can see his adams apple (your target, the larynx), then simply punch in normally, using a jab, or if you are comfortable with it an extended knuck jab.

Note, this KILLS. If you are new to the jurisdiction, the cops will very likely try to put you in prison. Plus his friends will very likely try to kill you. The problem of small towns. You may wish to get some pepper spray, and use it. Again, you have to balance the fact they will say YOU aren't fighting fair, ignoring the fact that all athletic fighting has this funny thing called weight classes.

Study wrist/finger locks, use Judo and Aikido sites. Even if he is big, you can do terrible things to thumbs and fingers when it's your entire hand against a single digit. Plus it takes months to heal, if it ever does properly, and the next time he tries it the pain if you get the same digit is unbelievable. You MUST practice these moves with your friends, make sure the ones you practice with won't go talking. Nothing exites the bully more than to be able to brag about how he beat up the weakling who was practicing self-defense, before you are ready.

Don't try the heel of the hand into the nose, it virtually never works all it does is smash the nose. Some people will be imobilized in pain, some will be so pissed that they become berzerk. Eye gouging in close is highly effective, and you can actually push the finger past the eyeball into the thin bones in the back (the orbit) and into the brain. As a minimum it will blind him, and cause his friends to label you as "unfair" while they beat you to a pulp crippling you for life. If lethal see above on local law enforcement and the use or so-called misuse of lethal force, i.e. you'll be charged with manslaughter.

P.S. As I've gotten older, I've started to believe more and more in concealed carry - God created all men equal, Colt made them that way.

How dangerous could it be in Barrow, Alaska?

I have worked in the most dangerous neighborhoods in Las Vegas visibly carrying $30,000 and have never been assaulted. And I was by myself with no security cameras.

That's why I said use web sites, and practice with friends. My first use of those techniques was in seventh grade, and the wrist lock and leg throw I used on the bigger kid who started it worked nicely. But you MUST practice. He also might try some videos, I have no idea which are good, he might try some searches to check on which are best for beginners.

I just corrected the hip throw instructions, I had my wife who is 4'10" try it with me, and made some size corrections

Judo is horrible, at least in terms of self defense. Wrestling is a little better, but the problem with it is that all you really have are holds and takedowns - great for tying a guy up, but not so great for ending fights, unless you can take him down and punch him until he stops.

Ramo is right about jiujitsu - Brazilian Jiujitsu is without a doubt the best grappling style around. Just remember not to go into a fight with nothing but Jiujitsu - learn some strikes, even just some simple boxing moves, that will allow you to cause damage before going to the ground with someone who may be 50 pounds heavier.

But the main point here, I think, is that for someone with NO martial arts experience and NO way to get any, advising him to learn wrestling or judo or jiujitsu is pretty stupid. You need a qualified teacher in any of those to be able to do anything.

The best thing to do is to learn some simple Thai kicks and boxing combos, that you can pick up on your own from books, and practice those over and over. It won't be flashy, and it won't make you the biggest baddest in your town, but you should also be able to hold your own to such an extent that you won't be a major target.

That's why I said "if you have wrestling experience"

And wrestling is fine as a submission technique. I can guarantee you that the average person within 50 pounds of me will not have a chance if they're on the ground with me. They'll be on their stomach trying to get up and I'll be dribbling their head against the floor for as long as it takes. At worst you get hit the one time going in for your takedown and you should be moving so fast that it isn't going to be any more than a love tap.

But I wouldn't go down with them. Throw 'em, give them a couple of heel kicks, walk away.

Yeah, ideally that's the case. On the other hand, there are a lot more people out there with experience in wrestling than with experience in kickboxing/boxing combos - certainly grappling is extremely important, but you should also have a way to take someone else out of their game. Punch him a few times, THEN shoot. Or if he shoots first, be able to do some damage to him on the way in.

I disagree with the kicks though.. I don't think you could be able to generate the power to the kicks that they would be useful, except knees and soccer kicks when your opponent is down. I'd just forget about that from the beginning, unless you get a bag or someone train you in it. I'd just keep it simple. Remember: with heart you can win even more strong opponents. He might hit with more weight in back, but you can always hit back with furious anger and maniac mentality

right I've had time to think of this and heard others opinions. The problem is, we don't know you well enough and certainly we don't know the person you're facing or the persons behind him. We don't know enough about the situation and we can't come down there and help you, only thing we can do here is give out opinions.

That said, my only advice now is to avoid the situation. Do it smart though, but try to avoid it really. We can't get enough facts here. Don't go do it. This is Supercitizen telling you, abort mission I repeat abort mission.

If you come under attack, defend yourself. Otherwise, stay out.

Drake: the hip toss I'm talking about is where you wrap your arm around the guy's neck, push your hip into his gut and throw.

http://byc-wrestling.tripod.com/moves/hip/hip.html

That's an example of a clean, picture-perfect hip toss. In a fight you:

a) don't want to go down with the guy unless you're confident of your ability to control him (ground and pound)

b) don't want to turn your back fully to the guy. just drive your hip into his body, get a lock on his neck and do a sloppy toss to the side instead of directly over your hip. It's much faster, and unless the guy knows what he's doing it won't make a difference.

I found the exact same site last night. That's how I figured out we were talking about different things...

Anyway, that's a good move. I'd still prefer the single leg, but it's more a matter of preference than effectiveness. I almost always wrestled up in weight against guys much bigger than me, so I grew to prefer leg takedowns over throws that weren't always easy to pull off. It's hard to throw a guy significantly taller or heavier than you, in my experience.

say, I was in a fight with a guy I didn't know but looked pretty tough and confident, if he was alone, no friends ready to kick my head when we're down, yeah I'd go down too. Few combos standing up, mostly just to keep him busy thinking I'll stand and bang. Nothing effective, just keeping him busy and thinking and when the time comes, I'd shoot in, get a doubleleg and drive the dude to the ground. And forget about submissions, what's he gonna do, tapout???? No, It would be ground and pound and getting up something in the lines of stomping to disabling the arm pretty decently and then running away.

But we know nothing, as far as I know, Space could get to the ground with a big dude, who would get top position and Space would be unexperienced and would get ground and pounded in the streets. Or if he gets that position, his friends would come in and play soccer.

So that's why my advice is, don't go to the ground. And my last advice was, avoid this fight. This might not be necessary. Defend if attacked.

No, no, no. You don't want kicks, and definitely no high (above the waist) kicks. A drunk can eat a few of your kicks without flinching, but if he grabs your foot or leg you are in big big trouble.
