Batman?

I haven't yet seen the Superman movies, but I am highly doubtful they are anywhere near as good as these two Spider-man flicks. Of course it'd be downright ignorant of me to condemn a movie I haven't even seen yet.......

you haven't seen the superman movies? What kind of freak are you! Kids!

Superman 1 and 2 were pretty good. The rest were crap.

What do you mean that's a Hell of a thing to rewrite? Haven't you ever heard of 'new' series in comics which basically takes the characters and backstory and rewrites the entire story? I believe the X-Men one is most well known, and IIRC, the movies mostly take from the rewrite.

Suffering from ads?

For the less nerdish among us, Ultimate titles put out by Marvel that are basically updates of established characters and doesn't effect the established canon.

The original Superman is the film to which all other comic-book movies aspire. And I will say it: SM did have three-dimensional characters whom you could understand, especially Clarke/Superman.

I recommend it highly. One warning: watch the first minute of credits as to get a feel for the Superman theme, then fast forward until you see Krypton on the screen. I believe that SM still holds the records for both the longest opening and closing credit sequences.

Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man are two titles that were renumbered (Vol. 2 now) but are continuing the same story line going straight since '63. Same cannon, same history, nothing changed. On the rare occasion I buy a comic, these are the ones I go for.

Ultimate Spider-man (and they may be others, I dunno), in order to be more accessable to new fans who don't have time to learn 40 years worth of history, have restarted the story as if Spider-man was in high school right now, in the 00's and just got bit by a (maybe not radioactive, but probably genetically altered spider, like the movie) spider.

So in Ultimate there are some differences. I hear that Aunt May and Uncle Ben are old hippies, hehe. Its a good idea, to keep it relevent to a new generation and to bring new people on board after the movies.

But for us old timers, don't fear, just totally ignore Ultimate, (like I'm doing) and keep buying Amazing and Spider-Man.

Put an end to popups!

Also, Spider-Man 2 made 40.4 million on Wednesday, busting the old opening day record set by Spider-Man 1 in 2002 of 39.5 million.

This weekend we'll have to see if the flick can top Shrek 2's biggest 1 day haul. Go Spidey!

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

My only complaint about the first movie was killing off the green goblin. He and Doc oc were the best villains from the early comics. I'd like to see some of the other classics in one movie (Rhino, Scorpion, Lizard, Electro) before we get into Venom and Carnage.

Well no one ever stays dead of course. Plus its a movie, there needs to be some resolution at the end. Furthermore, with all the cool villians out there, we wouldn't want Green Goblin and Doc Ock to keep popping up. Lets move on to others.

Superhero movies are a bit different, because they usually have so many villians that it seems they can go on for 6, 7, 8 films easy... but the temptation must be resisted! In other types of movies, you may simply just run out of story to tell.

Naw, the problem with Batman wasn't that they made too many movies, it was that they tried to cram too much into the movies.

That's what Spider-Man is purposely avoiding. It is tempting to please all the fanboys who really want to see Electro, Scorpian, Rhino, etc etc, up on the big screen, but when you stick them all up there together then they are empty characters. Like Batman movies with Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Robin, Bane and such all in the same movie. Just doesn't work.

Spider-Man is going slow, and they could just keep going for years. They want to make it an on going franchise like James Bond. As long as they take as much care to develop real characters and plausible storylines, go for it.

Of coursem ever since JMS took over Amazing Spider-Man, Spidey's orgin was changed drastically. And this is canon.

I disagree. I think they made too many movies, especially after Michael Keaton left. Batman was then a new actor for every movie. It was getting stale and old as the backstory was the same and wasn't progressing. A movie franchise has problems lasting after the 3rd one, even a great franchise. A lot of times the 2nd one is the peak and it goes downhill from here.

I think after a while people tire of the sequalitis. Superman suffered the same fate as Batman and you can blame what you will, but any movie series has only a few go around before it starts getting stale.

It's easier for TV series. There is much more room for episodes where nothing really happens and there is a lot of character building instead... or its shlock and campy stuff (think of the original Batman show).

Naw, it was Val Kilmer and more so Joel Schumacher.

If Spider-Man keeps the same elements in tact, and doesn't get some lame ass director like Schumacher, then I see no reason why it can't continue for many films. I mean nothing at all has changed about James Bond, but they've been making those movies for 40-50 years.

He did? Right now, they're filming Batman Begins, with Christian Bale playing the younger hero. It's supposed to be a darker, more gothic, rendition more influenced by the early comics.

I don't think it's dead, but they need to quit treating it like kid's stuff, ala Phantom Menace.

Clooney was too much of a nice guy. These Batman(s) owe more to 'The dark knight' than the original Batman and it requires a certain type of 'psycho' temperament to pull it off. Michael Keaton was good in that way. As Bruce Wayne he was a likeable guy but as Batman he had 'killer' in his eyes.
