Awesome movie, better than the first.

Even my girlfriend who hates "fighting and loud noises" enjoyed it, after disliking the first quite a bit.

spoiler(highlight to read):
And I'm glad that MJ eventually found out who he was...

It was sad going through the movie with everyone hating him and nothing going right and all he wanted to do was the right thing.

Happy ending for the hopless romantic in all of us.

Brilliant film. Easily better than the first, in every respect. Easily better than even X2, which had to date been the best superhero movie (I honestly don't get the Superman-love).

MY GOD!!!

I didn't notice this before, but this film cost $210,000,000 in production costs, plus a $50,000,000 marketing budget. This means that before the studio can even claim a dime in profit that it must gross over $520,000,000! There has been only one film that grossed over $520,000,000 in its first release... and I doubt this thing will do Titanic-like numbers. The likely audience is much smaller.

What about the foreign markets? Titanic made close to 1 billion worldwide.

This movie could easily break 600 Million worldwide, or a profit of 130 million.

Titanic made $1,800,000,000 worldwide, far surpassing the #2 film ROTK.

Generally worldwide distribution is handled by a company other than the domestic distributor. In this case, it was a co-production between Columbia and Sony Pictures, with Sony getting US distribution and Columbia getting most of the international distribution (though other companies are handling the Russian and Chinese distribution). Now I don't know about how they split the costs, or whether one of the companies limited their exposure by having a cap written in the contract, but still... $260,000,000 is a lot of jack. Given theater participation, exchange rate fluctuations, taxes, etc, it is likely that this film will have to gross $800-900 million worldwide before it sees a profit for all involved.

Merchandising deals generally do not count for or against a movies profitability, instead being separate line-items. Also it is likely (hell, probable) that the merchandising deals were set up by Marvel, which has little to do with the making or financing of the film. So even if the merchandising brings in an extra $500,000,000 in profit, those monies do not offset the films production costs.

Marvel sued Sony back in 2003 because of a dispute over merchandising, with Marvel claiming that Sony owed them millions and was trying to dissassociate the tie between Marvel and Spiderman in the minds of retailers. At the time of the suit, Marvel retained most of the merchandising rights, but did enter into a joint venture with Sony about some of the items. Marvel threatened to revoke Sony's use of the Spiderman license after this film, meaning that there might not be a Spiderman 3 anytime soon.

I can't find any information regarding the resolution of this lawsuit, however. Anybody wanna help?

The point was to show that a Spiderman-less Peter was attractive to not only more girls than Peter+Spiderman, but to a different type of girl: note that the landlords daughter had more than an air of the skank about her, implying that without the responsibility of the job, Peter would fall into the wrong elements - the beautiful, virginal Kirsten would've never gone for "regular" Peter, but the skanks would.

I disagree with that interpretation, and while I still think the scene was kinda pointless, I do appreciate Monk's interpretation.

The blond girl didn't seem to be a skank at all. She was an awkward, nerdy, girl from across the hall. I suppose I do agree though that this would be type of girl Peter could expect if not Spider-Man and suddenly confident, because the girl is a gawky outcast, just as Peter was a gawky outcast.

Btw, I FINALLY saw Spidey 2! I know, I was too busy before...

WHAT A FLICK! I mean I really liked the first one, but it doesn't hold a candle to this one! One of the few superhero movies where it is shown what it means to be a superhero. What sacrifices you have to make and the difficulties of saving everyone and then living a life. Absolutely wonderful and made the hero seem more 'real'. Then again, that is what Spiderman is all about, no?

I have to agree with monk on the cake scene. It was this scene in middle showing how basically good people are in this maelstrom around Peter and MJ. Tiny suprises in the morass.

I will have to say that the people helping Spidey in the train scene was one of the best scenes I have ever seen in any movie, superhero or not and was really touching, how they moved their savior to a safe location by passing him back with their hands and then laying him down and talking about how young he looks. Then Peter waking up and the passengers saying they won't tell anyone and then standing in the way of Dr. Ock. Just remembering it again touches me in a way the chick-flick-of-the-month never could.

Look forward to Spidey 3 with GG2.

The only problems with the movie were a result of the theater I was in. The sound was messed at the higher notes in the background music and the picture wasn't clear for some reels. Aside from that, good fun.

I finally saw Spidy 2 the other day. It was pretty good but the Hajji copy I bought for $3 was utter crap; I mean it was zoomed in way to far, someone's head was in the screen half of the time, and the sound was very fuzzy. Still, it was the best I could do while in Iraq.

Put an end to popups!

It's looking like this film won't top its predecessor in grosses, nor Shrek 2, and it is possible that it won't beat Passion of the Christ. Last week it grossed $35million, for a total of $313mil, and if the trend continues where it loses 1/2 of it's grosses each succeeding week, will be very hard pressed to break $375,000,000 (POTC is at $370mil).

SM2 was fun, certainly an enjoyable movie.

But greatest comic book movie ever? No way. Batman was better, for one thing. SM2 definitely suffered from some big flaws, chief among them an uncompelling and really unthreatening villain. Granted, Spider-Man has weak villains in general. But it felt like Doc Ock was just a minor nuisance, and he really didn't make much of an impact. Molina's portrayal was great, far superior to DeFoe's scenery-chewing in SM1, but he didn't have much to work with. I mean, they could have played up what happened to his wife so much--but it was never mentioned again.

I'm still wondering how Doc Ock could waltz back to his secret lair without being noticed/followed. Had the writers never seen a helicopter chase on "COPS?" And those are just shirtless hillbillies--we're talking about tailing a guy who's stomping around on 4 huge metal tentacles!

Why should I accept what categorically is untrue?

Batman had better atmosphere, a better villain, a better story arc and even better character development. SM2 wasn't terrible, but it wasn't that good.

SM2 had a better backdrop (it's New York was better than Batman's Gotham), a more realistic superhero story (though that is Spiderman's biggest strength), and much better action scenes. I can't imagine how you can claim better character development! Bruce Wayne doesn't hold a candle to how Peter Parker evolved.

Hell, even Ebert calls it the best Superhero flick since Superman 1.

Realistic? Let's see...Batman--no supernatural strength or powers. Spiderman--a "radioactive" spider bites him and he has super strength. Realistic?

SM2 had some good action scenes, but these aren't the be-all and end-all of a movie.

quote:

Let's see...how about the scene where Peter Parker completely stood aside as he watched a kid get beat up by thugs? How is this good character development? I'm not a superhero, and I would even do something about it. All he had to do was call the cops. But he did NOTHING. That made him rotten.

Bruce Wayne had a wonderful character arc. His motivation was clear, and there was no doubt about what he would do or where he was going. Parker's development wasn't bad, but could have been much better, especially considering the cheesy bit with him missing the play and the over-the-top sillyness of the James Franco plot

quote:

It's a SUPERHERO story. Better backdrop doesn't mean 'realistic' because in the real world you don't you have people with mutant powers, people from Krypton, etc.

quote:
Realistic? Let's see...Batman--no supernatural strength or powers. Spiderman--a "radioactive" spider bites him and he has super strength. Realistic?

Yeah, realistic. Bruce Wayne is millionaire businessman by day and then has enough time at night to go out and fight crime? And he can still make all of his functions? On the other hand Peter Parker is in danger of failing school, losing jobs, always tired and run down because being a superhero would seem to dig into real life unless you saw it has a part time job.

quote:
SM2 had some good action scenes, but these aren't the be-all and end-all of a movie.

They are a major part of it.

quote:
how about the scene where Peter Parker completely stood aside as he watched a kid get beat up by thugs? How is this good character development?

What, did you turn your brain off before you see movies? He stood aside because that was the point where he gave up being Spiderman because it was too draining, too demanding. Later on he realises that he has their great responsibilty and CANNOT step aside. The standing aside and watching the kid getting beaten up was much more important to the character developement of Spiderman than any scene was in Batman, which had very little character development at all. You said, his motivation was clear... where is the character DEVELOPMENT.

quote:
And who says Ebert is a great critic?

A great number of people. I know I'd trust him over you.
