SciFi's favorite line, but perhaps there's some truth to it. Public panic may be the government's bugaboo...
Perhaps if we started panicing now they would divulge all as it wouldn't matter anymore?
Anyway, do you think disclosure of aliens visiting earth would cause panic?

If the US chose to reveal the aliens visit earth, it would cause some social unstability in several ways, definitely.
First, you'd get all those hysterical people who'd go like ahhh, they will kill us/use us for their own good, we're all dead, blah blah. There are enough people in whom such hysteria would be easily provoked by public disclosure.
Second, it would be a huge problem for religious people. Christians, for instance, see humans as a unique creation, God's choice, etc. Knowledge of aliens would cause huge problems for many religious people and organizations.
Those two would be the main points. For many people though it would actually be good. I believe that the US now has to disclose its files on aliens. I can understand during the cold war, when the main concern was that USSR would learn anything about aliens or get to any of their technology.
Currently, though, the politics are just cowards. See, disclosure about aliens would be equal to saying "yeah well we've lied to you for 50 years, aliens are here actually". I think that people would trust the government significantly less if it admitted to concealing information about something it keeps saying doesn't exist.

"Evidence of alien visitation today doesn't make up for lack of evidence about alien visitation 50 years ago."
Somewhere there's an airforce hanger with the sign, 'Place Evidence of Alien Visitation Here' on the door.
Hey, what about all those sightings? Abductees?
JohnT, did you ever see the videos from Nasa? One was of a bolt of energy shot at a passing UFO which changed direction. The other was when the shuttle released alot of light and lit up numerous ship looking things. The light release was some sort of screw up, don't recall the nature of it.
Proof? No, but hey...
