What interests do we have in Djibouti that justifies having troops there? or for that matter anywhere else.

They were just about to start asking George Bush the 1st about that, when BOOM! Gulf War One happened, quite handy for the war-profiteers of the military industrial complex.

Actually loads of people tried to vote for someone else, but some swift and thuruough ballot tampering and the criminalization and right-to-vote-denial of vast numbers of black Floridans who (technically) had never been convicted of anything in their life was enough to save the day, and ensure that Democracy served its purpose once more.

Exactly what alot of people want to know. Somehow the yanks manage to have Vital National Interests all over the place, usually near valuable natural resources, or places where 3rd World peasants might get ideas about socialist policies or nationalist economics or descent taxes on corporations and so on. Sometimes America seems to decide it has Vital National Interests in a place Just Because, and nobody can figure out why.

Alot of people where quite insistant on knowing what interest America had in Iraq for instance, at the time, the current King, CEO or President of America mumbled something about WMDs and Al Qaeda, but so far none of that has proved to be very substantial.

If you can figure out what military interests America has anywhere outside of it's own borders, you be sure to let us know.

Uh, yeah, duh.

You're not gonna have vital national interests in a barren desert devoid of anything useful, in which you have no ideological enemies.

Djibouti?

Anyway, how come anything valuable or useful in the world with only 3rd Worlders calling the place home tends to end up with a wopping great big American Military Base nearby sooner or later?

Is it because every resource that exists on planet Earth of value belongs to America?

If it's not a military base, it's 'military aid' or some puppet regime that has it's Torture Police trained and instructed in an American military college in Virginia somehwere.

Failing all that, it'll be American backed Freedom Fighters.

The resources of the whole planet are in America's Interests, and of Interest to America. That's why the yank military think-tanks invented the concept of Full Spectrum Dominance (aka, Nose in Everybodies Business Doctrine)

Every major world power in history has acted the same way. It is only natural for a dominant economic power to reach out and protect or control the resources that its dominance relies on. The US is better than most in the fact that usually billions in other type of aid befalls these countries.

The benefit of this does not just fall to the US however. The US Navy protecting sea lanes also helps assure your way of life for example.

The troubling thing is the immense hypocrisy, and the US tries to come across as world policemen/heroes/saviours, when they are not. They are merely there for self-interest, and only their interests. I would at least like it if they admitted that.

It is possible for the US government having dual interests, you know. Are you criticising us for putting our own citizens interest first? No elected government would long last if it didn't. Once our interest are served, the US has a stronger record than anybody in history in supporting self determination for other people. Would you dispute that? I would be very interested in you showing me any country that has ever done more to support freedom. Hypocrisy? Ha! People are just pissed because we are very good at looking out for our national interest.

There is no doubt that Canda is a supporter of democratization around the world. CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency) does a good job of implementing the principles of USAID.
