You're being mendacious. Everyone knows the Spanish government fell because it lied about the bombing by blaiming it on ETA when it knew AQ was responsible. Saying otherwise is just partisan lying.

The old government was going to fall anyway, no support for the war in Iraq, OBL just may sure it would fall with the bombing.

And you can't say it was even one percent that Spaniards were scared. Only right-wing American commentators have said it was because the Spanish got scared.

If the Conservatives hadn't lied, but instead told the truth from the beginning (without being forced by the Socialists), who knows. We can guess it would have been an even bigger defeat had the Socialists been the ones to break the news that the government was lying.

I didn't say it was 1%, I said you can't say with certainty even 1%, because aside from FoxNews sermonizing, there's no evidence to support the position that the Spanish surrendered.

Yes, but if they resent you because you gave arms to people who slaughtered them, or you slaughtered them yourselves, or you overthrew their democracy, etc...Then perhaps you should look at your government and make sure it never happens again, as opposed to simply dismissing it as "Oh, well people will always hate us, so let's all just go home."

I'll have to admit that there is some truth in that. I do believe that the overall trend is good.

I do support the war. Why? Well I've posted literally thousands of words on just that subject.

I see it as a bit more complicated than that. Simply put...There is usually more than one side to an issue.

I hate to say it, but you're right...

The election would've been close barring the bombings. Like you said, PP idiocy cost them the election.

And people weren't really scared that I saw; Spaniards have been living with chronic terrorism for over 30 years in the form of ETA bombings and low intensity street violence.

August 14, 2004: A U.S. Army Stryker brigade stationed in the north of Iraq, around Mosul, for eight months now, has proved itself quite capable. The Stryker armored vehicles are controversial, as they are light armored vehicles that move via wheels, rather than tracks. The Strykers are also catching a lot of criticism for the usual problems a new combat vehicle encounters. The Stryker brigade equipment exchanged a lot of armor protection and heavy weapons for more electronics and communications equipment. The brigade has an initial version of the “battlefield Internet” that the army is slowly putting together. The action in and around Mosul is not as heavy as it is down around Baghdad. But there are heavily armed Baath party diehards and al Qaeda terrorists up in Mosul. The Stryker brigade has seen a lot of action, some of it quite heavy. It was thought that the Strykers would be very vulnerable to RPGs, but only two vehicles have been lost that way so far. In some actions, platoons (four vehicles) of Strykers had dozens of RPGs fired at them with no serious damage. The protection on the Strykers has been up to the job, but the troops, and hostile Iraqis, have also noted that the Strykers are faster, and quieter, than armored vehicles. This turns out to be a battlefield advantage, something American troops had forgotten about. The last large scale use of wheeled armored vehicles by American troops was in World War II. Some of the details of how those vehicles could be used had apparently been forgotten. A wheeled armored vehicle can more quickly move out of an ambush, or any other kind of trouble. Wheeled armored vehicles also make a lot less noise. The “track laying system” is inherently noisy, wheel’s are not. Strykers can sneak up on the bad guys, an M-2 Bradley or M-1 tank cannot.

The troops in the Stryker Brigade are trained to same high standards of all American infantry, which means soldiers capable of operating at high speed. The Stryker brigade has a new communications system that allows for speedier operations. Whether it’s getting out of an ambush, or getting into position for a raid or attack, the extra speed leaves the enemy at a disadvantage.

If NZ had been unfortunate enough to receive a "tantrum" from the US I think it would would have been a great deal more memorable than were whatever diplomatic noises you are mistaking for a tantrum.

I think they are a good choice for the peacekeeping stage the troops are in. Big noisy slow to start armor doesn't make as much sense.

Though I hope they will research why the RPG's disable those 2 that got hit.

Anyway, this is a long overdue move. Glad to see the Big Red One finally coming home from Germany.

Looks like the troops are coming mostly from Germany, Turkey, Japan, and South Korea.

The US whined, moaned and threatened when NZ told them we didn't want their nuclear weapons in our ports. They threatened to drop us from the ANZUS alliance, so we left on our own.

What did the US do? Big fat nothing.

This is bad. I always liked how the American army de facto sponsored the German economy.

And we'll probably see US politicians from coal mining states oppose this. You see, one of the reasons we have troops in Germany is so we can ship US coal over there to provide energy for our troops. Buying all our energy from the Germans, which would be cheaper, doesn't help politicians here that much. The same thing happened in the late 1800's in the American west. That's why it took so long to suppress tribes like the Apaches, the politically connected wanted those troops out west and not doing much other than consuming beef.
