I would imagine that we have excersied greater restraint than most countries would have given similar power. You must remember that our governments obligation is first to its own people and then to the world. The rest of the world operates the same way. If your point is that the US has made foriegn policy mistakes, then I would ask what country hasn't. If you want to talk about the country that has given the vast majority of developmental aid in the last 50 years, then we would also be discussing the US. |
Though she should note that, in relation to economic size, Greece is the winner.
The United States itself is beginning to slip into despotism, but only after putting millions of others in despotism in the name of "fighting communism".
Yes, its done much good but its also done much bad. "What power hasn't" you ask, but I ask: If Americans KNOW this is happening, why the **** don't they stop it? Some would say the US has never been a democracy, but Americans still have a lot of control over their government - its just that leaders know that none of them choose to exercise it.
Americans know about the atrocities the US has helped, funded, and commited in the name of bringing freedom to others. So, why don't they take action to stop it? "Some Americans do!" you might say, but Americans are more concerned about gay marriage than they are about keeping their own government in check.
No nation can be perfect and selfless. However, when Americans go off espousing about how, essentially, the US is the savior of the world...Don't be surprised when people start resenting you, especially those people whos lives you ruined for your own national interests.

Canada is not a world power, and its interests often coincide with those of the US in many regards. Thus, it doesn't have to take the action the US does, nor could it if it wanted to. |

If only it was as black and white as you suppose. In a nation of 300 million people there is great debate over what is right and wrong. The people and the government do learn and they do change. Sometimes it isn't what fits your definition of a right or wrong philosophy. WRT others resenting our actions, I daresay that would be the case in any event...it's a consequence of having power.
