Oh, I see now.

From that article, that's insane! I'm so sorry you and your housemates should have to deal with this, but there's the typical mis-management of the Copenhagen city council for you again. The schools are falling apart, and I could go on and on.

Terrible.

My apartment's already risen 150% from when I bought it in 1997, which is incredible in itself. I'm a millionaire for crying out loud. But maybe I'll hold on to it for a couple more years with the Metro and all.

Good for you guys! I quit smoking 11 years ago, and I haven't back slid yet. I found the nicotine patches to be very helpful. I would recommend that if you use the patches that you not try to rush things, it may take 2 to 3 months to completely taper off. Most people should start at the highest dose, unless you typically smoke les than a pack/day of a very low nicotine brand. Stay on the starting dose for 4 to 8 weeks, then move down to the next dose for 4 to 6 weeks, then to the lowest dose for 4 to 6 weeks. The idea is to help your brain to forget the rewarding effects of rapidly administered doses of nicotine administered via the cigarette. It takes time. The most common mistake I've seen committed by people using the patch method is the premature termination of treatment.

My father is still kicking himself you-know-where for not investing in an apartment in Copenhagen back in the day where you could get one for half a million kroner

It's a pain living here, but one gets used to it. I can live with it at 21, but just imagine waking up one day at 40 in a place like this

Back in WWII, my grandfather used to blow up railroad tracks when German troop transports were supposed to pass, so I reckon I'll someday get a room at 4. maj Kollegiet on Frederiksberg, but it's going to be difficult getting used to sharing kitchens and bathrooms with other people, y'know.

"Anyway, rest assured we'll keep the 'don't quit quitting' slogan in mind if things do turn out wrong in the end. Have you been in a similar struggle yourself?"

Monk, it's a psycological battle against your cells, and yes I've waged it and won, but only after losing a thousand times.

Last thing Pekka is going to do is come in here and tell us of failure over a few smokes... Once a person makes a thread like this it's easy for his cells to convince him he's quitting for us rather than himself. Then, he can have a smoke and as long as we don't find out about it it's ok. This is reason # 1 to not tell anyone you're quiting. Tell them when you've quit and really have something to brag about.

Unless you've overcome an addiction this post seems wierd. That's cause it is wierd. Withdrawl and addiction is wierd. It's the cells...THE CELLS!!!

AAAARRRRGGGG!!!!?!

Lancer, no that's exactly the point why I made the thread, as it is would be kind of embarrasing to not make it now. It's now 2 days, and no smoking. I almost grabbed some few times today, if the first day was surprisngly easy, this isn't easy anymore. I can say I'm craving. I've eaten a lot of crap and a chocolate bar. I again have troulbe sleeping. I think I should destroy the pack, it seems very tempting. ALso my hands sweat a lot, I don't know if this is a sympton of craving or not, but they do. I feel lkie I should have one smoke before I go to bed. The feeling is strong. It's like I can't sleep before I do that. But I won't do that so don't worry peeps.

Pekka,

In the name of all that's sacred and pure: Destroy the filthy pack already! Soak it in sulphuric acid and throw it in the garbage bin!!

Kill it!

I can't believe you didn't get rid of it when you made the decision to quit.

Don't take anti smoking advise from a guy named 'Winston'! I'll tell you what to do Pekka. Go have a bowl of non sugar cerial w/ milk before bed. Then, take a vitamin C, a tylanol and an aspirin. After about twenty minutes watching boring TV with the bright turned way down, hit the sack. The devil will come for you, but resist! If not, don't worry. You will quit again if you are worth a damn. Remember the vit C, tylanol and aspirin. I ate this combination every hour w/ a small bit of food. Really helps. Might be unhealthy, but is better than smoking the rest of your days.

Btw, if you do quit, don't let your cells convince you that it was easy. That just makes it easier to start up again.

Keep the smokes in the next room and don't quit for me, *******! I think you're an ******* anyway, so quit for YOU.

Pekka, day 3 is harder than 1&2, so be ready!
Also, if you give in on day 3 you just have to do day one & 2 again to get another shot at it. That's ok, never quit quiting, but make it easy on yourself and don't smoke day 3.
Having just one cig makes tomorrow day 1, never forget THAT.

yeah, it's amazing how you think just smoking one before bed isn't actually braking the deal. It's funny how much you can minimize the meaning of it.. it's like one man in war, who needs it, it's meaningless. I don't know. I hope the day 3 won't be lot worse, I'm growing little agitated now. Not angry or anything, but let's just say I'm not in a mood for taking too much crap .

"Not angry or anything, but let's just say I'm not in a mood for taking too much crap"

This is directly from your cells. Remember, all preasure comes from within, so where does this come from? It's not you, but it is the cigarettes influence on you. It's not from your mind, but it is from the most basic cellular mind that knows nothing but its desire for fulfillment, the last thing your cells really need for health! Yet your cells can't discern that what they want is the last thing they need, any more than they had any influence on STARTING smoking when YOU decided, in your stupid youth, that it was the thing to do.

Now you're smarter. You've decided to quit. Thing is, it's harder than starting. Lesson in life not to be missed young Pekka.

But some other time, now is just time to quit, and that's enough. You have your young hands full...and I aint talkin' bout yo' Pekka.

First time in your life, you face the wall.

"I am currently in the third stage of this process."

I see the reasoning. Lose two unhealthy addictions and you might lose a third. The "motherland" was just whoever the old fart in charge of the politboro was, and what choice did you have over that?

Alot of Americans feel they have no choice these days, but they miss the choices. Regarding government, we are not alot better off as I haven't had a choice I really liked in a long time. Not a choice I'd choose anyway.

"But the Motherland is so much more than an old fart in Politburo!"

Okally Dokally

However if you have no say then you are just cannon fodder to the politboro's agenda, which may or may not be in the interests of the motherland. Though, they are likely to invoke the motherland often and vociferously in order to convince the unwashed masses that they and the motherland are one in the same.

"Is the third stage the most difficult?:"

Piece of cake.

Well, I've been drinking tonight with my mom and sister...they both smoke, and I had two cigs tonight.

However...I really don't want another, which is different than when I've drank before. I think this is a GOOD sign...

At the party last night, I was offered but didn't have any...I think I'm progressing in the right direction...

Sorry to hear about the slip-up, Emp. Fab., but it's very difficult to abstain if you're in a social gathering in the first weeks after quitting. Keep trying, you have your mind set right at least!

How is everyone else doing? I hope you manage without too much suffering.

Me, I'm close to entering day 4 now, and I think I'm coping quite well. It has really surprised me how, apart from the first day, the withdrawal symptoms have actually not been as bad as I had anticipated. Of course I have trouble being without it often during the day, and the hours seem to snail away sometimes when I focus too much on the craving that's still very much present. But overall, I think it's going better than expected.

Now, I must admit I've been living like a plate of mixed vegetables would for the past three days, which would probably explain why I haven't been tempted into surrendering to the craving - yet. I don't go out, spend no money, eat very little, sleep whenever I can.

What separates me most distinctly from the world of vegetables these days is probably my intake of coffee and those little liqourice tablets (or what it is they're called) that I found in my cupboard.

But please, if you think I start posting too much like a bunch of carrots or a large serving of Brussels sprouts, alert the authorities immediately!

Got spare money?

I quit smoking almost 5 years ago. I didn't really have a choice, because my right lung was already ruined (almost empty of alveoles), while the decay of the left had already begun. I had smoked about 30/day before. My way was first to reduce this to 1 cigarette every 2 hours (about 9-10/day during my uptime). I kept this for about ten months. After this, I quit cold turkey without further reduction. The first 2-3 days I used nicotine patches, but then I stopped to use them. The first two weeks were the hell, though. After this, things went ok. I never smoked a single cigarette again. But still, after over 4-1/2 years, I still smoke in my dreams sometimes.

The good news is, I had my lung screened a few months ago and was told, that they regenerated alright. Damage is still visible, but it got much better.
