Yep. They're the next Germany or Japan (best-case scenario) or Korea (worst-case scenario).

Probably Korea...

Well, we have to leave sometime, so I don't see the shame in making our departure sometime after the election. I don't know what the climate will be like after the election, it's possible that conditions might be favorable for our withdrawal.

Does anyone know if the process for the registration of candidates has begun?

I want us to leave Iraq the moment we can do so without breaking any of the short sighted promises we made about our committment to not leaving too early. I would have them pull out today except that would so clearly break so many of those promises that it would encourage a huge upswing in terrorism resulting from enemies of the US concluding that the US must have withdrawn in response to all the terracts and to the insurgency.

Suffering from ads?

There's probably some decent way of making a long stay in iraq possible from an economic point of view. Perhaps weapon manufacturers could rent different parts of the country for tests for example. That way everyone wins.

Sadly this is true. It sure feels as if we are stuck here now that Bush got us in there but I sure as hell wish he hadn't gotten us in there in the first place. The only people this sad sorry enterprise ever had any realistic chances of helping was the Iraqis and that is only going to be if the Iraqis work damn hard to make the situation work out. How can we be sure they are up to it?

Saddam has plans to put his name in the hat.

http://www.sundaymirror.co.uk/news/...-name_page.html

quote:
SADDAM Hussein is planning to stand in elections to reclaim the Iraqi presidency from his jail cell.

The former tyrant - captured in an underground bunker last year - has told advisers that he wants his name on the ballot paper for the January elections.

His legal team were only granted access to the former leader last week, nine months after he was caught.

Hussein, 67, who is no longer in Iraq but in a secret location, has said he is determined to stand as President and put up candidates from his old Ba'ath Party. His lawyer Giovanni di Stefano said there was no chance of his client being tried before the January elections as the Interim Government had hoped.

"It is the intention of his excellency President Saddam Hussein not only to candidate members of the Ba'ath Party in the January elections but to candidate himself as President. Nothing in international law or international jurisprudence precludes that.

Mr di Stefano, who said that Hussein has still not been charged, added: "In light of the worsening situation in Iraq, the instability and lack of leadership it is probable that he would have a majority vote more than sufficient to restore him to the rightful President of Iraq.

"In the last elections he received 98 per cent of the vote and in a recent poll conducted by Gallup on behalf of the state 40 per cent of those polled voted for Saddam to be executed and 42 per cent elected for him to be reinstated as President.

"That was five months ago."

Granted, I didn't want to use the Sunday Mirror, but **** happens. I like the bolded part of the article though.

The question should be about the January election in Iraq, not the US ones- if Kerry wins, he won't take office until after they occur, and if Bush wins, well, he will have to do so becuase even if he won't have to run again, his legacy and credibility for the rest of his term would be shatered if he did.

I would imagine there will be a large down sizing of the millitary forces in Iraq at some point. But like in Afghanistan i expect that the us will always try to keep some of its forces in iraq, it makes sense on so many levels?
I dont think you'll see a 'vietnam' withdrawal if this is what the post was posing?

bump

I was going to make a new poll, but I didn't want to create yet another Iraq thread.

actually I thought we had a better Iraq poll, but I can't find it. I know they recently did a forum wipe.

I have notice lately on television some liberals backpeddling on the Iraq war. Some are now saying it was a good idea.

I still think the war was a mistake, but I do see some obvious benefits. And I do agree that many people are against the war only because Bush was the one who did it. There would never be this much opposition if clinton had done this.
