quote: That's why you look at YPA in passing (because no one really runs up the rushing yards when behind). That takes into account the number of passing attempts. |
Imran,
Take the Colts' defense for example. They are something like 10th versus the run, but they were 28th last year and have lost personnel, not gained. How? The Colts are winning early in a lot of games, forcing people to pass. This explains a) Our good rushing stats and b) our poor pass stats. Now, I could say that the Colts have a top 10 rushing defense when they obviously don't (even though we have had teams try to run on us), but they have the worst pass defense in the league. Had our run defense been slightly leakier, our pass defense would have been just as good as in years past (around 8th).
See what I'm saying? When you have a good run defense, you give up more passing yards hence more total yards, but if you have a bad defense you give up less passing yards hence less total yards. Combine that into teams don't run when they're losing by 14+, then you have many meaningless yards.

Colts Rushing YPA: 23rd
Colts Passing YPA: 30th
It would help to read my posts .
Btw, the Colts are 15th in Rushing Yards

I'll look at last year. The Colts were 4th against the pass in yards, but had the 5th most passing attempts against, so the Passing YPA were 20th.
The RUN defense was 20th in rushing yards allowed and 24th in YPA.
So the Run defense isn't that much better this year, but their pass D is very much so.

That isn't borne out. The Steelers are #1 in rushing yards against, and are #2 in total yard against overall. The Redskins are #2 in rushing yards against, and #1 in total yards against.
Miami is last in rushing yards against, and yes they are 14th in total yards, but not because they give up less yards because of the rushing attack, but because their pass defense is so good. Miami's Passing YPA is 3rd in the league. OTOH, the Bengals who are 31st in rushing yards do not have the same passing defense and are 25th in total yards against.
The team with the worst defensive in yards allowed in the league are the New Orleans Saints, who are 30th in rushing yards allowed and 31st in passing yards allowed. They are 28th in Rushing YPA and 32 in Passing YPA.

Lets look at Points Scored:
Are you telling me that you consider the San Diego Chargers to be the best Offense in the league? And that the Falcons have a better offense than the Broncoes?
What about defense? Are you saying that the New York Giants have a better defense than the Pittsburgh Steelers? Are saying the Cardinals have a better defense than the Titans?
