I don't like showboating all that much, but sometimes it's funny and it makes a point.
I'm watching the Cleveland Baltimore game, and it's
... d'oh! A 7 yard punt! Ravens ball on the Browns 8 yard line!
anyway, it's middle of the fourth quarter and the Ravens have the Browns backed up against
... Lewis just scored. 19-13.
their goal line. On 3rd and impossible Jeff Garcia is in the end zone and throws the ball away just as he's tackled for a near-safety.
The man who tackled him offered Garcia his hand, to help him off the field. Jeff, a bit shaken up, doesn't realize it for a split second but then reaches up, grabbing his opponents hand, and pulls himself upright.
Except it doesn't happen. As soon as the hands touched, the Baltimore player removed his hand, high-fiving an approaching teammate. Garcia rolled back onto the field as the expected support never materialized.
Now usually I would be thinking the guy is being a putz for removing his hand, but in this instance I think it was a smart thing to do: The QB is the leader of the opposing team. Anything you can do to shake his confidence (especially given that they are the 2nd most protected position in football) helps your team.
Now it could be counterargued that doing such a thing could inspire a team for having its quarterback so righteously dissed, that, newly inspired, Cleveland will roar back, erase the current 20-13 lead (4:18 left in the 4th), and show Baltimore what the Browns think of such cheap shots as that.
But they won't. Because it's the Cleveland Browns. Because it's Jeff Garcia. Just watch.
