You know, if I was an African-American, I would get down on my knees every day and thank God that my ancestors were snatched from the motherland and brought over here to America.

Those slaves that established the first black presence in North America paid a huge price in the indignities they suffered. They are just as important to American history as the Founding Fathers of the country. Without slave labor, our economy would have been crap and we never would have been able to support our troops in the Revoultionary War. Those slaves deserve to be held in everyone's memory with the same regard as for martyrs and saints. But I digress..

If I was an African-American, I would realize that if my ancestors had succesfully evaded the slave traders and remained in Africa until the current day, that I might be one of the savages that perpetrated these horrible crimes in the story above. Or that my Mother or sister was one of the women raped.

Africa is the armpit of the world. Raped and exploited by stronger countries, rife with disease, pestilence, hunger, and crimes against humanity. Yes, if I was an African-American I would thank God my ancestors were slaves..

Whatever they put up with, could it be worse than what they would put up with if they and their family had lived and were still living for generations in the Congo?

Actually, without the trans-Atlantic slave trade today's descendents of the slaves that were brought over would not exist because their parents would likely never have met. Whether they would be in Africa today doesn't really enter into it.

Do a google search for "Thank God For Slavery" and you will be amazed at how many quotes from African-Americans you will find that agree with my point of view.

Name one country in the world that has produced more significant black contributions to humanity than U.S. None of that would have been possible if Africans were not assimilated into American culture via slavery.

CaligastiaSpace, I don't think that is true. Certainly I think it is true that Blacks in America are generally better off than ones in the Congo (though not necessarily all of Africa). However, acting like the slave trade didn't cause most of those problems is ridiculous.

It wasn't full of the level of violence and chaos that came afterword. That was my point.

It would have benefited Africa (and probably other nations too) far more to have engaged in trade and peaceful interactions rather than slavery. Especially in the long run.

The Congo was a kingdom and organized under a government before the slave trade devastated it.

The issue isn't wether it was a happy-happy land of glee before the slave trade and colonies started, the issue is wether it would have been better off it they hadn't started.

Not the same thing. The Holocaust was about one madman trying to exterminate an entire race of people. Isreal was created because of the Holocaust, but the creation of Isreal really has done nothing to change the lifestyle, prospects, or security of Jews around the world. If I was Jewish and had an ancestor snuffed out by the Holocaust, my life is not better today for the Holocaust having happened or for Israel having been created.

Americans that brought Africans across the Atlantic and enslaved them, SAVED those Africans and their decendants from the Holocaust that is 21st century Africa.

It is a recurring theme in history that weak countries get exploited by stronger ones. It's immoral, it's not right, but it is a fact. It's just human nature for that to happen. If I'm an African-American looking at it from that perspective, I have to thank God my ancestors were snatched from Africa and brought to America.

Unproven. The article and your stats in the other thread are apple and orange comparisons. The stats in this Congolese article speak towards crimes committed by soldiers but not of the entire population. The figures in your thread take the entirety of the US population.

I would speculate it much more likely to be raped by a communist solider in Dem Republic of Congo than by a soldier of any political flavor in the US.
