If you check a stratics or vault site, they'll usually show the numbers of people online, or have a utility for finding server population.

I think the Camelot Herald has recorded statistics of server activity, too.

what I'm asking is what you guys do in MMORPG's.

do you just go around and kill things? Do you explore? trade? socialize?

do any of thes games have good quests to do? Is there any rewarding storyline?

I want to get into some of these. But I'm not sure I can play a game in which there is no end. Yeah I did play Diablo2 for a while. You could say that had no end as you could go onto nightmare and continue levelling. I eventually grew bored of levelling though.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

I've only played Everquest and I only played it for ~3 months at the very beginning when it first came out. I find MMORPGs to just be time wasters not really games. I really enjoyed exploring in EQ but since the game is built to not really reward that all you end up doing is level grinding. Even by the end of the first 3 months Everquest was becoming ridiculous as every little spot I had found was always packed full of players camping monsters. It was especially annoying when there would be anonymous high level player who would monopolize spots because he could kill everything in a few seconds. Stuff like that still happen?

The real fun is working with other players to overcome challenges. The key to enjoying MMORPGs is socializing I think so if you don't like to group don't bother playing them. Morrowind is basically a single player MMORPG so play that instead.

Personally I doubt I will ever play a MMORPG again if they continue to be level grinds without real gameplay. That's the reason I quit EQ because I died and lost all my items. I could not get them back because my body somehow disappeared. Few months of work down the drain for nothing. Progress Quest is more fun.

Check out the site linked to in my recent Daedalus Project thread for a deep insight into why people play MMORPGs and what they entail.

The main reason people play MMORPGs for a long time imo is the people they play it with. Because you play 10-20-30hrs a week the people in your guild become quite good mates, especially after 3 years+. Exploring only last so long, getting the phattest lewt (kekeke GIVF ITAM!!!!!1111) can be stressy. PvP is fun too, I don't like fighting against an AI as I can exploit any weaknesses too easily, humans are more unreliable, and i don't have the twitch reflexes or the low maturity level required for decent online FPS games.

Aside from that... I can't think of any that really appeal to me. I know not many people here play MMORPGs, but maybe someone here who's atleast been following them some more can fill me in on what's been happening with the games, or recomend a good one.

Ive gotten back into playing Ultima Online. I've yet to find a good shard with enforced RP. I know of one that I like, but my conenction to the server sucks, lags like hell. The few shards that I can play on have too fast of skill gain and stat gain, too much non-roleplay non guild/faction oriented PvP (ie, people go around killing each other just for loot. not even the nooBs are safe), poor quests, and no story. (well the best story I found on the shards I can play is "OSI CLONE!")

I downloaded a server emulator (UOX3) as well. You have to build the world pretty much from scratch, doors, tables, vendors, monsters, treasures, street lights, you get the picture. Also an offline server is destined to be severly lacking in players. Its a fun project though.

all of the above. Its like a chat room/rpg. Unless you get into the more action oriented ones such as WWIIOL, then its pure combat goodness. I miss WWIIOL.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

EQ2 is launching pretty much where EQ1 launched (minus major 1st month stability issues, hopefully.) All the special rules servers and other goodness came later. Expect EQ2 to branch out too once its found its feet (the same applies for most MMOGs.)

The final stress test for WoW started yesterday, by the way. But you have to be a paid subscriber to FilePlanet to join it.

The free open beta starts next week. (and I'm guessing it's only going to last a week.)

I've heard of two things suggested, but can't confirm whether either one works.

1. Just apply for the beta and make up an american address.

2. Use an american proxy.

I'm enjoying myself so far.

I have a undead priest named Myrgot on server 4 and I'm going to make a gnome warrior (probably named Nort) on server 6 tommorow, I think.

The gameplay is really good so far. Wether the community is or not remains to be seen. (of course, this is an open beta so it won't be a good judge anyways) I haven't actually interacted with anyone yet - any attempts I've made have been ignored. :rolleyed:

And I'm still hopefull that they will make a RolePlay server... it's one of the choices when you ask it to recomend a server (although I don't know to what effect) so hopefully that is an indication that they will have RP servers eventually.

OB wont last long it seems.

Upon release I'm hopeful a way will emerge for me to just buy a code from the US somewhere and download the game. I did that with CoH before it hit Europe and it worked fine. Much better than waiting 3 months or more.

Last night when I checked all of Fileplanet's keys were gone, and the Blizzard site was down. It's up this morning though, so I am downloading the client. I used an address I found online (that's legal right? ) to circumvent the account creation block.

You can get any US game via the Canadian site DVDBoxOffice much cheaper than you can from any US web store that uses courier shipping. That was how I got CoH.

Yeah, I know about that side, though I'd prefer just to buy the code as I did with CoH. The issue is the billing. The standard line on this so far is that they can't bill people in Europe, and therefore even with a US bought copy of the game you can't play. Not sure if this is the case or not, because there are so many rumours and counterrumours.

Of course I could ask a friendly US person to set up an account for me.

I hadn't heard WoW were going to be so absurdly draconian. Have they got different publishers in Europe? That is usually the only time they care so much, and even then games like Horizons have talked hard about it but proven easy to circumvent.

I concur. The monthly billing issue is the one that may prove the stumbling block though. Again I'm not sure why; CoH billed me fine, unfortunately.

What is the cause of the delay with the european release of WoW? Is it like with Fallout and Baldur's Gate where the children had to be removed before the game could go on sale?

No, the Roleplay servers specifically.

WoW has lots of PvP servers. It's the PvE servers that are the oddballs, actually. The whole premise is horde vs. alliance, after all.
