MarkG: No you can't vote unless you have a valid government issued ID card so you or I couldn't just show up and vote for Che. Also, at least in my home state, lists of registered voters are kept and when ever someone votes their name is checked off the list. At the end of the day the computer compares lists to make sure no one voted twice. Also, at least in my state, all votes are counted electronically before the voter leaves the polling station so the voter can correct any problems before leaving.

There are a limited number of states where photo ID is not required.

I am one of the 8% or whatever of D.C. voters who will have voted for Bush. Unfortunately, we only had 7 offices to vote for, one of which is bogus (shadow U.S. Representative). No interesting initiatives or tax levies.

Thanks... it took awhile to find them all. There are a bunch more even smaller candidates that I didn't think were worth adding.

Here in NYS we had 6 at least, Dems, Reps, Independent, Liberterians, Socialists, Greens, and I think a couple of smaller ones, with Bush, Kerry, and Nader each on 2 party lines- an this is NY, one of the hardests states to get on the ballot in.

Voted for Kerry two weeks ago. We hardly had anyone on our ballot, and there was only one candidate running other than the president, so I feel that the experience was somewhat anti-climatic (my roomie, from Maryland, had oodles of people to vote for). Here's how my (NH) absentee ballot went:

President: Kerry (given that Kerry's probably going to win NH, I had a good opportunity to vote Badnarik, actually, but it looked closer when I originally filled out my ballot)
Governor: John Lynch (D)
U.S. Senate: Judd Gregg (R)
U.S. House: Iris Estabrook (D)
Constitutional amendment to redistribute some authority from judicial to legislative branch: Voted against.

Badnarik, Nader, and Cobb were on the presidential ballot. Peroutka may have been; I'm not sure. Other than that, there weren't any other 3rd-party candidates that I noticed (despite the strong Libertarian presence in NH).

There's only a couple small towns that open the polls at midnight. State law allows each town to close the polls early (before 7PM) if EVERY registered voter has voted. That's what Dixville Notch does to get themselves in the news every 4 years .

The good news is that in the entire state of Florida there have only been 20 individuals were challenged upon their right to vote. That means the Republican claims of massive voter fraud have been completely false as have Democratic claims that Republicans are attempting to prevent voters from voting.

It seems that nearly all of the preelection claims made by the interested parties have proved to be completely groundless.

Both of these assumptions are false. EVERY WHERE you must show IDs and most every where there are not long lines. Only in a few states are there long lines even with the near record voter turn out. I myself only waited 15 minutes start to finish and that was with a record sized ballot stuffed with many local propositions.

I've never had to show an ID to vote. Neither in Michigan nor in Ohio.
