But, IF it happens, I can see some upsides, too. Do not downplay the ingenuity of the American people.
One thing it will do is that savings/investment rates will increase.

= less spending (demand)

Lots more home gardens, lots of informal community associations and barter going on behind the scenes. If it passes, I know that’s what I’ll be doing. I got a big back yard. Could easily set up a mini-orchard and a garden big enough to provide most of the veggies I get at the local Kroger right now.

= more supply (do you know what less demand and more supply means?)

End result will be that I’ll have more money in my pocket (federal tax bite goes away, and I get it back in my paycheck), healthier, home-grown foods, and I have more money to invest in dividend-paying financial instruments, which are taxed at a lower rate!

The tax will be lower, but the return will also be lower - less demand, and more supply.

Let me tell you how it will be
There's one for you, nineteen for me
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
Should five per cent appear too small
Be thankful I don't take it all
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman
If you drive a car, I'll tax the street,
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat.
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat,
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet.
Don't ask me what I want it for
If you don't want to pay some more
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
Now my advice for those who die
Declare the pennies on your eyes
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
And you're working for no one but me.

*sigh* Ahhhh yes...THIS is what I missed!
No...I never said that food would be so expensive blah blah blah. YOU said that and then cleverly inserted it into my mouth.
What I said was that people will look for ways of cutting corners.
I have a big back yard. Why pay an over-inflated amount for green beans, when I can grow my own? Hardly a revolutionary idea, and I'd expect to see a lot more of it if this tax goes through.
Thus, I get money back in two ways. First, because I'm not being taxed automatically like I am now (see the "Federal Witholding" line of your last paystub), and second, I'm growing many of my own foodstores, and not having to pay artifically jacked-up prices on them.
These monies, I shall invest in nice, low-tax-bearing, interest vehicles....
