If only it were so. But the awful truth is that Bush's percentage of the vote increased more in blue states than in red states.

I think the basic problem with we Dems is a general disconnect between us and rural America. 2,500 of the U.S.'s 3,000 counties voted for Bush. While we won big in the 500 urban counties, we're pariahs out there in the countryside.

(1) Raise taxes(in principle I do not disagree that they will need to be raised).
(2) More regulations on industry(a non-issue at this point unless you fail on other tasks).
(3) Increase spending further.
(4) I don't see any spending cuts just yet,so doubtful.
(5) As far as I can see we are going after Al Qaeda all over the world. Unless you were planning something as retarded as moving troops into the Pashtun Tribal areas.
(6) The French et all are going to have to meet us 1/2 way on this one I'm afraid.
(7) It already is being funded. There comes a point where throwing more money at something isn't going to do the trick.
(8) See above, but will you make the decisions on what can and can not be done to actually have Homeland security(Getting control of our borders,changing the way cargo is moved into the US by either moving ports around, passing something like GB's Navigation acts,etc?)

Btw, the alienation is not just in the rural areas. It also includes large swaths of exurbia and suburbia. My hometown suburban/rural county adjacent to Columbus went 2-1 Bush.

There are a number of ways to parse this election. I learned this interesting fact when I was watching The News Hour:

In the eleven former Confederate states, Bush won by an aggregate margin of 5 million votes. And in the remaining thirty-nine, he lost by a margin of 2 million votes.

So I think it's fair to say that Bush won overall because he turned out the religious right and the nationalistic gonna-kick-somebody's-butt vote. (I grew up in South Carolina so believe me, I know whereof I speak.)
