60 Million Votes Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

President Bush passed 60 million votes today.

The thing that interests me is that this race was close to being a blowout. The only Midwest state that wasn't within striking distance was Illinois. Bush almost even picked off Oregon. The big D states had a tough time pushing into the 60% range for Kerry.

I would be worried if I were a Democrat.

Bush should not have had 48% of the vote in socialist wonderland, Minnesota. This is Mondale country, for God's sake!

This is a very bad sign for the Ds.

Well, more like 3 and a half million out of 120 million cast. I wonder what would have happened if Bush would have actually campaigned in those states that were close...

But in any event, I'm more interested in what this says about the future, GePap. Bush was competitive in many more states than he should have been, given the coalitions that he built.

Turnout in NY was 46%-imagine if it had been 60%? That would have mean at least 400,000 more votes for Kerry or so. I think Turnout in solidly blue states might have been low, lowering Kerry's total numbers.

And Bush's results say nothing of the future- bush can't run again- you might as well have asked what Clintons numbers in 1996 meant for repugs in 2000.

Bush and his administration is critically weak now, however, and because of his personality this is only going to worsen. A lot of people that voted for him weren't all that excited by his policies, and are even against many of them. However, he takes the win as a mandate to pursue all of his policies to the hilt. This is going to make a schism in the Republican Party, and the Democratic Party is going to become much better organized and together by 2006.

The loss was a set-back, yes, but it is only going to give to for the mistakes of the current administration to really hit home with the American people.

IMHO, of course, but I am pretty darn confident about how Bush is going to act (that's just his personality and how his administration works). The moderate Republicans are bothered by what is going on too. This should help the Democrats out a lot by itself, and they should manage to get their act together by 2006.

As we discussed in the Warning to the Republicans thread. IMO the repubs have now an opportunity to have a big tent, they need to understand they need to make room for the moderates.

I don't know, Ogie. Bush didn't create a big tent coalition for the election, so it would be tough for him to rule with one. Is he going to try to create such a big tent for the congressional elections in 2 years? That would be interesting.

He might be able to campaign for Senators in formerly no-go areas.

From what I understand, every president for 30 years or so has claimed a mandate, no matter how the election turned out. I guess the days of having to have roughly 60 percent or more of the vote to claim a mandate has been out of fashion for decades now.

As I write this, an employer in a nearby city is laying off 110 employees and moving their jobs overseas to China. The cold, heartless part of me wonders how many of the soon-to-be-unemployed workers voted for Bush, while the rational part simply states that this would have simply come to pass no matter who was in office, either now or four years ago.
