Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Let's put 4 on each team and be done with it.

I'll be able to play late Saturday (CST).

Okay. I will start Huge Game 1. Team 2 can start with someone other than me; since it's going to be AU mod, please 'mod' the AU mod to take 31 other civs (or however many you agree on - i'll play however many.) If anyone wants to try both mod and non-mod, speak up; we should establish who's on what team at some point. lmtoops, are you on team one or two? (AU Mod = team 2)

This is the .doc file with the initial settings plus the inital screenshot shown

Also attached is a .rar version of the .biq file - if you want to use it partially in setting up the AU mod version.

Only major change, other than the 31 civs added, is that the Curragh has carry capacity one and "Naval-Transport" AI strategy checked instead of Naval Power. It means the AI won't attack with curraghs (very often), but instead will use it as a transport. (So, any time the AI isn't blocked in by lack of coast, it will try and find new coasts to settle, rather than sitting on a five square island and moping. Still won't suicide, but oh well.)

And this is the initial tech tree choices I made. Of course, come 20 turns (ie 3 techs if i'm lucky) it's up to someone else to change those choices if you like - but i leave them here for those curious of my initial strategy.

My strategy, by the way, would be to beeline to philosophy (no AU mod ) and use that to get the fairly expensive Mapmaking, which is key anyhow; then aim for Temple of Artemis, which is proving important in my SP game in this scenario, as it gives me culture in cities i normally wouldn't have culture in, while picking up spearmen and iron on the way. Then get the military techs, and finish with the hard stuff - perhaps by then we'll trade for some of the lower stuff anyway. Mapmaking is pretty valuable to the AI.

But i'll be lucky if I get to philosophy.

Turn 10 update: On the expansion of the city, and fortunately building of the second warrior, a barb. hut was opened up; but on the same turn, my warrior to the north opened up a can of whoop on another hut and earned Ceremonial Burial for his troubles.

Finally ... the tech tree. Traded alphabet for Masonry and some cash (inca), traded masonry for warrior code and a LOT of cash (aztec). I'm a tech trader at heart, sorry if you all aren't But, in a game like this tech is very hard to get (notice i'm getting 6 or 7 trade a turn and still on a 50 turn pace for writing) so I like to have as much as I can.

And the final push to my post count (i'd post multiple images if I could per post, but i can't):

The save.

Let's figure out who's getting it next -- we can just go to player 2 (Beta?) if he wants, but he wasn't sure he was playing, so smellymummy you might want to grab it.

I'll start a "storyline" thread tomorrow or something, this thread can be the "gameplay" thread (stuff like I posted here) and the other can be the "roleplay" thread. You don't have to post anything here, or you can post in as much or more detail, or anything in between - the storyline thread is probably more interesting. (Unless you think a single thread is better?)

Why do you fear it so much? It's perfectly possible to do the same Philosophy beeline using the AU Mod on Emperor difficulty. Starting with Alphabet makes it even easier to accomplish.

IIRC, Aztecs start with Warrior Code. This means the Archer could be their free offensive unit they got at the beginning of the game. I think right now they're doing Settlers, like all other AI civs.

Modo-
- From what I recall, a couple of 'fake' resources were added to Philosophy to encourage AI to go after it. Hence, Phil. beeline is harder. I don't "fear" AU mod, I just don't play with it - so I don't know it as well as you all do.

Archer - possibly true, I dunno. Aztec to me are usually very aggressive, which was my point.

And we'll decide if we want it (a second thread) or not for game 1.

played. not much happened...

there was an entertainer in london, which i switched to working for food.

warrior in the west found the cultural borders of an aztec city. they are also close to us

settler was built and sent off to the silk coast.

York is founded.. working the silk for the extra trade, and building a curragh

finished the mine near london where the worker was left, and then sent the worker north for the road to York and the silk luxury.

a warrior finds the ocean to the north of spain. that way is a dead end. at the same time another warrior finds the cold ocean south of york, another dead end.

london cranks out a worker, sent that one off to the silks (along with the other worker for extra speed). started a build on a second curragh in london

warrior pops a barbarian hut south of london in another geographic dead end.

land seems to be going in two directions: east of spain and west of aztec. doesnt seem like much room for england

science is on track, as long as trade is high we'll get to writing soon. philosophy is in our grasp. in fact, we might have plenty of time to get one of the cheaper techs before going for philo

sounds good smelly That's about the land you expect on this size of map and this many civs ... 70% water = 30% land, and 160x160 = 25600 tiles *.3 = 8000 roughly land tiles /32 = 250 land tiles per civ. And that's counting some of the islands that nobody starts on (small islands). We probably have 180-200, not far below average. Certainly I haven't seen much more on either of the two SP games I started ... about to start a third, since the first got boring and the second was a poor start...

im sure the land is correctly distributed, still, i can see 6 or 7 spaced out cities in the immediate area (not counting what can be fit in the tundra), and that's if aztec and spain don't expand towards us

* smellymummy guesses that spain will be the first to go down

7 cities will be a lot. Other civs, starting in more central positions, might get even less. I played some huge maps with only 24 civs and often ended up building 4-5 cities before the AI closed me in.

The thing is, you can do very well with a small empire, because you usually get many favorable trades.

well in my experience with seafaring civs, its the first few thousand years, diplomacy deals pays off big in science and cash. a big AI or two always seem to catch up quickly though, and then it seems to level the diplomacy factor a bit

Well, it probably depends on how you use diplomacy. In my games on archipelagos, I can usually get everyone to pay me so that I do all the research. This makes the AI loose all cash and slow down research, while I get money to keep my science rate up. I just posted a game in the strategy forum (here) at the moment when I began exploiting the AI. With more civs than usual, you get more paying customers to sell to, so it should be even easier to achieve in this succession.
