The Reign Of Prince Beta of Faraway Bay
Prince Beta was seen as late bloomer and reluctant King. Some even said that royal breeding had nmade him ...er ..somewhat absent minded. But once he was cajoled onto the thorne, his reign was not as disastrous as some had predicted. And it was a peaceful and prosperous time for England, withe Beta carrying on the expansion establised by his Great Uncle, King Connaught (also known as Connaught Spell. )
The kingdom was left to Beta's nephew, Prince Smellem (als known as Smellem Real Bad).
The details of Beta's reign: (it should also be noted that Beta lived much longer than anyone expected, no doubt due to the lack of stress in his early life and during his reign.)
From 950bc to 775 bc.
A quiet time. More units built - including our first horseman (or maybe it was our second). A good infrastructure had been established by King Connaught, and Beta's objectives were three fold:
1. Build on that infrastructure
2. Ensure homeland security
3. Stake out our borders to the north and west, as Connaught had done to the east.
To this end - and more specifically, objective 3, New Port Annie was bilut on the Aztec border. The site is good, and a temple was started to convince the locals to join our cause. Later, a temple was also started in Iron Mountain, and the cultural impact and nearness to London may work to our advantage with the nearby Aztec community.
775bc
CoL finished. Traded MM and IW to the Ottomans for Polytheism and 43 gold.
Started Monarchy after a short moment of thought. We will be going to war in the not too distant future - that is inevitable. And war weariness could be an issue. Besides - we are playing England. Love live the King!!!
We have a huge tech lead on most - and a good tech lead on the others.
710bc
Aztec settler headed for Iron Mountain area, and no doubt south of it. Over the next few turns, I use units to block its passage.
650bc
Iron connected and most warriors are upgraded.
630bc
Curragh HMS BoPeep sains a barb galley up north. The explorations continue.
590bc (or thereabouts)
Oliver's Castle is built on the peninsula, across the bay from London. Once connected, it should be a good site as it is close to the capitol.
470bc
After checking on various turns, I sell CoL to:
Spain 183 gold
Japan 110 gold
Arabs 57 gold
Maya 47 gold
I also sell the wheel to Sumeria (who are waaay behind) for 37 gold.
Spain now has contsruction - but they would not trade it.
This bumps the treasury up to well over 500 gold.
Prior to this - the Spansih were trying to get settlers across the border. I continually frustrated them by moving units back and forth to keep them wasting their time.
450 bc
Betaburg settled west of London.
And around this time, also finished a second granary in Conterberry.
390bc
(I told you that once Beta got on the throne, he wouldn't let go. Actually, sorry about that. I was close to getting the last two cities in - and wanted to end on that note.)
St.Simonsville settled on the coast SW of London, and Humpback on the horse hill on the western coast.
With that - Beta's reign ends. We are well on our way to monarchy, the military is OK (we are weak to the Aztecs and average to the Spanish), the treasury is in fine shape, and we have a good layout of core cities.
I leave my suggestions for three further cities, (see further down), as well as strong recommendation that we embark on a library construction program. Research time is a killer.
Long Live the King. All hail new King Smellem!
