Huge Successors 1: Build and Conquer! Tired of ads?

Okay, so I was reading about the Succession Game, and noticed that it looked quite fun, not to mention fast moving!

So let's start another.

Rules:
1) 5 players will be allowed
2) 20 turns played at a time until the end of the first era; 15 turns during the second era; 10 turns in era 3; 5 turns in the fourth era and into future techs. End the current round before cutting turns down (IE first player, that's me, looks to see what era i'm in.)
3) This is a Single Player Game, except that you're playing only 20% of the turns.
4) Please post a brief history, and screenshots, of your game.
5) Please save the turn on the end of turn X (ending turn) - ie, on Turn 20 (3000 BC), I played the turn, got to the "Press enter or spacebar for end of turn", hit ctrl-S (after getting screenies), and quit (without hitting spacebar). Turns should end on the turn evenly- ie, turn 20, turn 40, etc (not turn 19, 39, etc. - sorry, I got a bonus turn 0 )

Players:
(Game#1: )
1. Snoopy369
2. smellymummy
3. McMeadows
4. Conmcb
5. Beta
(Edit: Revised turn order to not confuse people)

(Game#2: )

1. Modo
2. Snoopy369
3. Grandpatroll
(Edit: Revised turn order)
(that's it so far)
Thread: here! for Huge AU Mod Succession Game.

If we end up with 2 games but only these players, I suggest two 4 player games - i'll move someone over into group 2.

This will be a HUGE game ... so:

Size = Huge
As many civs as we are allowed (32?)
70% water
Archipelagos (Continents were too big... basically large pangea with several of them)
Emperor

Other settings were middle-of-road. Nasty Barbarians, though.

Also, post what civ you think we should play. When I start the save-tracker/storyline thread, it will contain a poll with the options of the various civs posted by players. The 5 spots are loosely on a first-come, first-serve basis, with the caveat that:
a) You must have a good enough computer to handle this size of game; it's frickin huge, so please start a game on this size of map and play for at least 50 turns first.
b) We would like you to play the saves within 48 hours. 24 hours is preferable, but if you can't regularly play 20 turns in a 48 hour period, please don't sign up. I reserve the exclusive right to replace anyone who's regularly missing that period. (And please post when you'll be out. )

During your 20 turns, you may play the game any way you choose, although realize that we are playing to win, and thus doing things that damage earlier emperors' choices is probably a bad idea, unless they screwed up. Also realize this is a cooperative game not a competitive one (although you can feel free to feel competitive about how many other civs you take out, and/or how many wonders, and/or anything else you can think of ) But, ultimately it's your call: You may enter a GA if you think we should, you may attack another civ if you think we should, you may raze or build cities at your leisure. Just be prepared to argue with me about it.

Anyone interested?

I nominate Arabia, by the way, as my civ nomination. Anyone else?

And that's 3 so far ... out of 5

I leave room for a Game #2 in case more than 5 respond.

Oh I definitely want in on this. I nominate the Ottomans as the civ. Monarch sounds good, I not really concerned about the rest of the settings.

Some suggestions.

Snoopy, if it's Monarch, you might want to consider a "weaker" civ and using the AU Mod for this. In the running succession game we are kicking the AI real bad ( ) and seem to be running out of challenges.

Also, consider making it a 10 turns succession at some point in the game. 20 turns becomes quite a lot in the medieval times and later. It allows the player to very much undo anything he might not like in the previous style. This means that the aspect of not having total control over the empire is lost later in the game.

Modo44 has some good suggestions. I would not mind kicking up the difficulty. I would rather not change to AU Mod. I don't know much about playing with the mod. Of course, we could just put this up for a vote.

I think we should start with 20 turns, but change to 10 turns at some predetermined time; possibly around 1000BC or start of the Middle Ages.

I really like the AU Mod for SP games, as it makes the game more interesting. It makes slight changes to the game, mostly to help the AI. It provides a slightly more difficult game than the level you choose (i.e. by choosing Monarch you get something inbetween Monarch and Emperor, IMO). The most visible changes are made to Armies and Cavalry, and also Republic is made weaker as a government form.

For details on the AU Mod, look here.

England would be fun.

Increase Your PM Length

16 is the max number of civs. It is still plenty.

My recommendation is to crank up the difficulty level. In the other succession game the save has rolled around to me and the game is pretty much in the bag.

I would like to see a level where we actually might lose.

I would vote for deity.

And as to number of turns - I think this should be put on a reducing scale. The first 20 turns is a HECK of a lot faster than 20 turns in the industrial era. I think going from 20 to 15 to 10 to 5 would make sense, or something along those lines.

Still debating on joining. Someone mentioned England - that would be an interesting choice - especially if played on an archipelago map on deity.

Okay, sounds like:

1. Emperor level works for most people, I'll work with that. I'm not comfortable personally playing on emperor, but knowing I have a few excellent players behind me to make sure we survive will go nicely.

2. We have enough players for 2 games, or nearly 2.

3. We have a partial consensus on England. I'm not sure i'm thrilled with Archipelagos - but look at some of the Huge Map Continents... I'll generate a few and play with how much land area you get etc. before making a decision. Maybe Archipelagos/70% or something.

I'm not particularly interested in the AU mod, although I like it conceptually I'm challenged enough by Civ 3, not being a great player myself. But, if we have 2 games and enough modders ... then we can do it in game 2.

And Beta, it is actually possible to have 32 civs. Not in a normal game, but using the editor you can get 32 (and otherwise have a normal game). I've made a game like that, and in fact will play one out.

As to reducing number of turns played, that sounds like a plan - but a little later on I feel than 1500 BC.

How Beta breaks it down sounds good to me - 20 in Ancient era, 15 in Medieval era, 10 in Industrial era, 5 in Information era. It will start with the first player in the cycle's turn after reaching that age, unless it is apparent that we will reach it during the first player's turn (ie, even on gameturn 18 hitting the Medieval age) in which case we will change it then.

Sound good?

Okay. I'm to 10 BC playing at my usual "challenge" level (monarch) on a Huge archipelago map, with 31 other civs, as the English.

I'm on an island with 3 other civs (egypt, celts, spain); not a lot of iron, but luckily I got the one that's readily usable, one other is way up top and hard to get to, and a third is on a small island just off the coast, not something the AI will go for. It's a very long island with a bulb top, so the Celts and the Spanish share a long piece about 4-5 squares wide, and the Egyptians and I share the bulb, which is about 12x12 (but irregularly shaped) (and that's counting diamonds directly N-S/E-W, corners touching, civ would consider this 24x24 I think based on their NE/SWxNW/SE count). Found a second island (by lucky curragh travel into the Sea one turn in a likely direction); also has 3-4 civs on it, Hittites, Iroquois, Persians, and possibly a fourth south of Persia (can't see 'em yet). Also a long island as far as I can tell. Definitely looks like this tends towards elongated islands with several civs on them; not horribly crowded unless terrain dictates (I was forced to attack Egypt because I was started in the middle of a bunch of mountains, essentially, and Egypt had the fertile area in the middle; now they have a couple of border cities. )

So, Archipelagos will work fine for the English, and 31 civs it's not horribly crowded (but there's combat almost right away i'd guess).

Depending on if we finalize the second game, I may start the first game today (Weds.) later on. If the players want to rearrange who's in what game, do it soon. Any options the second game wants different from the current first game, speak up!

Oh, and one change I made and think we definitely need to make if we're playing archipelagos was to give curraghs a transport capacity of one. It's not a major human factor (you're not going to use it much) but it raises the AI build rate for curraghs a lot - from almost never to sometimes. It's a recommended mod by most, and makes naval-type games much more ... interesting. Otherwise AIs just fart around until at least mapmaking (which is a medium to low priority anyways ).

Less civs (24 is ok) and the AU Mod.

Just a note. A huge archipelago might become unbearable later on because of turn times. And I mean on fast computers.

(By AD 250, which is where I finished for the night, turn times were still fine on an Athlon XP 2200+ 1.5gb ram homebuilt machine. A few seconds of noticeable delay, but only a few. Of course, I'd expect it to get longer as the game goes on - but it hasn't so far, maybe 1 sec total more than it was towards the beginning.)

Got spare money?

Snoopy, the more water, the more time turns take later in the game. I remember reading somewhere that the algorithm for trade routes gets really slow when there are too many water tiles present. This becomes drastic, once trade routes can go through sea and even more so, when oceans become open. No big worry, just get a book to read while playing civ.

Hmm. And I assume you mean more different patches of water (since a 70% water archipelago has the same number of water tiles as a 70% water pangea)?

I'll be finding out eventually anyhow. I'm going to play for hours today my test game.

And I adjusted the players in game 1, since 3 people accepted England, and 2 of us didn't care, for a non-au mod game. The second game can fight it out later.

And as mcmeadows said this game will be much shorter than a PBEM game, so it's not something to worry so much about. (Although at 5 turns later on, it's not THAT much shorter. )

Actually, the setting directly affects the number of coastal cities, so the closer to archipelago, the worse it gets. And, usually, the more water, the worse it gets. If you make a round grassland patch with lots of water around, it won't hurt.
