There's a slight problem with that. Except for the firewall, these programs are all retroactive, i.e. after the fact. You can scan for a virus you don't know, and same thing with spyware. Thus, it is paramount to use programs with as few security holes as possible.

Modern anti-virus software isn't necessarily retroactive: it intercepts most files from email, instant messaging, etc.

Okay, by retroactive I meant they can only catch known viruses. They can't touch new breeds, ones that are most virulent and damaging. Thus, while they certainly are useful for the average user, who are more or less clueless, they aren't what they hyped up to be.
