I'll try. AFAIK they are still being prosessed, meaning they are in limbo - not allowed to be productive and not in immediate fear of being removed. The entire process including appeals can often take years. If there are appeals to the courts (and not just the Refugee appeal boards) it can add more years. If ultimately they are legally required to go home, they can always try the 'disappear' approach and stay indefinitly.

I do believe some have lost the first round of their claim. I can try to find more info but a name would be really helpful...

I did find this though, which I shall throw out to encourage discussion....

quote:
KEYWORDS - REFUGEE PROTECTION DIVISION - PERSON IN NEED OF PROTECTION - GENERALIZED RISK – NEXUS - FEMALE - NEGATIVE - UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
The claimant claimed to have a well-founded fear of persecution by terrorists by reason of her nationality as an American citizen. She also claimed to be a person in need of protection. She had been scheduled to fly on one of the airlines which flew into the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001 but her trip was cancelled. She was so frightened by this brush with death that she sold her home and came to Canada. The Refugee Protection Division found that the claimant was neither a Convention refugee nor a person in need of protection. The risk of terrorism was a generalized risk which existed equally for every American and, to varying degrees, for everyone else in the world. RPD TA2-12575, Morrish, April 16, 2003.

Put an end to popups!

Fox News is certainly going to jar a lot of Canadians who are used to having their News sugarcoated with a lot of anti-American spin.

Here's your answer Berzerker. They're just starting.

quote:
By KATHLEEN HARRIS, OTTAWA BUREAU

The Federal government is challenging an American soldier's bid for refugee status in Canada. A government official confirmed the feds will oppose arefugee application from Jeremy Hinzman because he "does not fit the criterion for status refugees."

Refugee cases are heard by an independent tribunal and the federal government intervenes in hearings only when there's a novel legal argument or high public profile.

Jeffry House, a Toronto lawyer representing three U.S. military deserters under the watchful eye of the U.S., said the Immigration and Refugee Board is expected to rule within weeks on whether his clients can base their claim on the legality of the Iraq war.

Hinzman's hearing begins Dec. 6.

"No soldier can be required to violate the law, and that includes international law," House said. "If it's justified to bomb a country, that's one thing, but if it's not justified, then it's no different than blowing the heads off babies."

Hinzman is one of four American soldiers claiming refugee status in Canada.

Wezil, well, if you haven't seen Fox News yet, you may have a hard time understanding exactly what I meant. There is a lot of subtle anti-Americanism in virtually every liberal media news organization except for FOX and some of MSNBC.

My sides are bursting. "sugarcoated with anti-American spin".

Sweetheart, you wouldn't know what objective reporting was if it slapped you upside the head. I suppose CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC are sugarcoated with anti-American spin? I suppose the fact that people in Canada (including myself) watch these American channels and take them seriously is because they're blatantly feeding our need to watch Americans being ridiculed? I suppose the fact that FOXNews, on the other hand, is going to be viewed with varying degrees of amusement by most Canadians is because it SPEAKS THE TROOF (to quote a great poster from elsewhere) and this will not jive with our compleely propagandised mindsets?

Too bad that the average Canadian has access to a wider range of viewpoints on their news than does the average American. Too bad you don't get about half your news from sources outside your borders like I always have. Too bad your glib one-liners are so out of touch with reality that they could have been lifted directly from your beloved FOXNews...

This is why I favour allowing FOX to be seen on cable here. I welcome even more diversity.

You're right though, SOME commentators on FOX are pretty far right... but most are pretty in line with what conservatives (small "c") are already thinking in this country. I think it will just give them more of a voice. For better or for worse.

Ottawa, where half the people are from elsewhere.

Ever been to the Atlantic or Maritimes? The Prairies? Lots of hicks there, mostly WASP.

Also Southern Ontario is dotted with these insular protestant communities which are very conservative... alot of Dutch Reformers.

I did business with the Mennonites (old order) north of Waterloo years ago. Very interesting. Most memorable day was when an older guy cracked what I reasoned to be a somewhat off-colour joke....

Be damned if I can remember the joke now though.

Gee Bob, nope, I don't think I'd have a clue about what was going on out in the provinces. If it isn''t in the Toronto Star it didn't happen as far as I'm concerned.

Of course there are far less conservatives in Canada proportion wise. I'm just saying that the claim many Canadians make that Canada has NO conservatives is just blatantly false.

It's not a question of whether there are conservatives, it's whether Canadians will buy into the vile and lies spewed by Fox.

Canadian conservatives tend to be more civilised than what the Republicans have become.

True, but its more of the same difference between Northern and Southern Republicans in the US. The point is southerners are monkeys and will believe anything. Friendly as hell though... as long as your not black or queer
