Pointing to statistics which show that many more Fox viewers believe that Iraqis used weapons of mass destruction against invading U.S. forces, that the world backed the invasion and that Saddam Hussein was intimately connected to the terrorist attacks of September 2001, they argue that Fox is a source of misinformation more than news. The station's commentators make no apologies for their views, arguing that they are a leavening influence in a media landscape dominated by "liberals" and other evils. Even Cable News Network, well to the right of most Canadian media, has been derided for not being hard line enough. Top Fox commentator Bill O'Reilly has dismissed The Globe and Mail as "a far-left newspaper." The National Citizens Coalition welcomed Thursday's decision. "Free speech ... also means having the right to hear other points of view," NCC vice-president Gerry Nicholls said. "The more voices and the more points of view Canadians hear the better." Launched eight years ago by an adviser to several former Republican presidents of the United States, Fox News is built around high-profile commentators who have become media celebrities. It claims to have 80 million subscribers. The Canadian Cable Telecommunications Association asked in April for permission to carry Fox News to Canadians with digital cable, satellite or wireless television service.

This is news? I get FOX news here already. Or is this a Canadian version of FOX news. i.e different to the content seen in the US.

It's new to Canada because of our CanCon rules enforced by the CRTC (Canadian Radio and Television Commission). FOX News was denied a license to broadcast in Canada a few years back, and there has been some debate over this here, especially since, IIRC, al Jazeera was recently granted a license.

Frankly, I'm not sure if this will be a Canadian version, although I strongly suspect it will be the same thing they see in the US.

Hmm...presenting a Republican bias to counter a Democrat bias is not "fair and balanced".

But I was wondering why O'Reilly stopped threatening a boycott of Canada. At the time he was, it was because Canada was giving sanctuary to a couple US soldiers avoiding the war. Now it appears O'Reilly was just threatening a botcott to get Fox News in Canada, i.e., Bill lied.

The reason I have no fear of FOXNews is that its viewpoints are so alien to most Canadians that it will probably cause revulsion and hence a backlash (if it has any noticeable effect at all).

Doubtful. FOXNews speaks to a demographic which already existed in the US. It's ridiculously out of tune with anything even close to mainstream in Canada.

They got 2.5 million signatures for the petition, IIRC. Only 1 million were to be required to force a referendum on the issue. Good thing for Doris that he wasn't able to pass that law. I certainly would have voted yes in the referendum....

It will be a subscription channel, so I guess we will have an idea of the demand soon enough. I would hazard a guess it will sign up a couple more than al Jazeera.

Personally I'm glad the CRTC made the right decision for a change. While I have no burning desire to pay for the priviledge of seeing O'Riley on a regular basis, I am pleased the option is there for those that want it.

I'll have to take that back, I'm not sure what has happened with the US soldiers seeking asylum in Canada. If they are still up there I wonder why Bill has quieted down about them and his threatened boycott. He might be waiting for Canada to make a decision, but I highly doubt O'Reilly will call for a boycott when Canada is letting Fox on the air. Does anyone know anything about these US soldiers in Canada?
