"Fox-hunting with hounds is to be banned in England and Wales from February 2005 after the Queen gave her Royal Assent to the controversial Hunting Act.
The announcement that the Act was now law was made in the House of Lords with the traditional Norman words "La Reyne le Veult", to a mixture of jeers and cheers from peers and MPs summoned for the ceremony marking the end of the parliamentary session.
Earlier, the Speaker of the Commons invoked the Parliament Act for only the fourth time since 1949 in order to force the legislation through in the face of stubborn opposition from the Lords.
The passage of the fiercely-contested legislation is expected to trigger demonstrations and legal action from supporters of hunting, who plan to challenge the Bill on human rights grounds and question the legitimacy of the Parliament Act itself.
Peers maintained their dogged resistance to a ban until the last moment, voting by 153 to 114 to retain regulated hunting.
Their refusal to budge meant that a compromise offered by MPs, who voted earlier to delay the implementation of the ban until the end of July 2006, was struck out.
Fox-hunting - along with deer-hunting and hare-coursing with dogs - will now be banned in three months' time.
RSPCA director of animal welfare John Rolls welcomed the passing of the Bill as "a watershed in the development of a more civilised society for people and animals".
But Lord Strathclyde, the Tory leader in the Lords, said events "threaten the livelihoods of thousands, draw a knife across centuries of tradition in our countryside but will lead to not a single animal being spared a violent death".
Some huntsmen have vowed to defy efforts to outlaw their sport, insisting they are ready to face arrest and possible imprisonment by carrying on hunting after the ban comes into place."
Considering this was supposed to be in the Labour manifesto when they came to power in 1997 it's not before time, but I suppose better late than never....

Take a stand and stop eating meat, chicken, fish, and never wear leather or fur again, and I might take your opinion seriously on this topic |
This is just a personal thing, I don't wear leather or fur but I do eat chicken, fish, meat.
My feeling is that animals shouldn't have to die for our amusement and/or vanity, I know its maybe a fine line to then say it's okay to eat them, but thats how I (and evidently The Queen ) feel.
I know people hunt animals but do you know how foxes are hunted? And wheres the 'end product'? Theres no food, no coat, just a dead fox. Killing for fun surely can't be right?

Remote control rifle range debuts
The site will let people shoot barbary sheep and other species
Soon you could go hunting via the net.
A Texas company is considering letting web users use a remote-controlled rifle to shoot down deer, antelope and wild pigs.
For a small fee users will take control of a camera and rifle that they can use to spot and shoot the game animals as they roam around a 133-hectare Texas ranch.
The Live-Shot website behind the scheme already lets people practise shooting at targets via the internet.
Gun sights
John Underwood, the man behind the Live-Shot website, said the idea for the remote-control hunting came to him a year ago when he was watching deer via a webcam on another net site.
"We were looking at a beautiful white-tail buck and my friend said 'If you just had a gun for that'. A little light bulb went off in my head," Mr Underwood told the Reuters news agency.
A year's work and $10,000 has resulted in a remote-controlled rig on which sits a camera and .22 calibre rifle.
Mr Underwood is planning to put one of these rigs in a concealed location in a small reserve on his Texas ranch and let people shoot at a variety of game animals.
Also needed is a fast net connection so remote hunters can quickly track and aim at passing game animals with the camera and rifle rig.
Each remote hunting session will cost $150 with additional fees for meat processing and taxidermy work.
Species that can be shot will include barbary, Corsican and mouflon sheep, blackbuck antelope and wild pigs.
Already the Live-Shot site lets people shoot 10 rounds at paper and silhouette targets for $5.95 for each 20-minute shooting session. For further fees, users can get the target they shot and a DVD recording of their session.
Handlers oversee each shooting session and can stop the gun being fired if it is being aimed off-range or at something it should not be.
Mr Underwood said that internet hunting could be popular with disabled hunters unable to get out in the woods or distant hunters who cannot afford a trip to Texas.
Mike Berger, wildlife director of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, said current hunting statutes did not cover net or remote hunting.
He said state laws on hunting only covered "regulated animals" such as native deer and bird species. As such there was nothing to stop Mr Underwood letting people hunt "unregulated" imported animals and wild pigs.
Mr Underwood also lets people come in person to the ranch to hunt and shoot game animals. |

You don't have to eat meat to survive... some poor animal gave it's life so you can enjoy your food... and don't think they waited until the animal was on it's last legs... they kill it in it's prime so it will taste good to you.

Oh, amusement is bad, but because they taste good, that's ok

Uhhh... yeah... your point?

Again... so what. Let's cost a bunch of people jobs... take away a tradition because some fox is hunted and killed... Again, be consistent, or don't bother taking a stand on such issues. I eat meat, I eat chicken, I eat fish, I wear leather... I do fish, but I will not hunt, but I have no problem with people that do... At least I'm consistent
