Ok so we established 3 fine settlements

One in 2030 BC by the name of Grandpa's Trolldom then 2 more by the names of Trolldom's pearl O'Mine and then Mt.St.Trolldom.

The Spansih are encroaching so we have spliyt the duties between Defense to protect our future and settler harvesting to claim land and supremacy to the futre.

...until next I wear my rightful Crown

That is correct (by this games' reckoning). Another correct way is to save the turn at the "Press Enter at End of Turn" spot during turn 20. They work out to the same thing - I prefer to allow my successor to change things prior to his first turn, not all do.

First turn, first thoughts, first SCREEENIE.

Ahh, a new leader to our clan. Modo (didn't I hear that name before?) went up Mount Trondheim to claim his rightful throne. He watched a new settlement, Stockholm, established to the far north.

He watched the land and other places came to his mind. Places that would make the Viking people flourish.

Then he went back down and visited all Viking towns. What he saw worried him. People would leave the towns for lack of food stored, to search somewhere else. He ordered more Granaries to be built, so that more citizens can stay well fed and help build the cities. also, a first Curragh was build in Oslo, to go on a journey, which (hopefully) would find other nations to trade with (first) and to conquer (shortly thereafter).

He didn't know exactly, why his ancestors started work on The Wheel. But changing the orders would waste a big effort, so he decided against doing it. His Philosophical theories would have to wait.

Tips for Grandpa:
Usually you can get most techs in trades from the AI, if only you have some expensive ones for sale. So research deep into the tech tree, to get the valued ones, rather than wide, getting cheap ones. Getting Pottery for Granaries, then Writing and Philosophy often works well, as the two latter techs are expensive and can buy a lot in exchange. And try to get contacts ASAP, so you can start selling early.

Early Granaries are extremely powerful, especially when you have some bonus food resources. Also it's often good to let cities grow to size 4-5 before they start making Settlers. While they grow, let them finish some cheap buildings and/or some military units and/or some Curraghs. Check the build orders below.

Trondheim built a Barracks and started training Archers, to deal with barbarian tribes, living south of the Vikings. They started coming dangerously close to our cities. But not for long.

In addition to that, some Warriors and our new ship, the Sunrise, set out to scout through Spanish territory. Looks like the Spaniards are mountain people, even more than we are.

After Granaries were built, more citizens could live and work in the towns of Bergen and Grandpa's Trolldom. Still, it would be too many soon, so plans for new settlements were in order.

The Workers near Grandpa's Troldom were ordered to Irrigate the Cattle tile, to give the city even more food. This way, many new Settlers would be available soon.
Tip: Archers upgrade to Longbowmen... except when you are playing Viking, in which case they upgrade to Berserks.

1150 BC

The brave crew of the Sunrise made it throug a strait, from now on the Sunrise Strait, to find a new continent! Soon after that, they met some people, calling themselves the Mongols.

We took away all Mongol gold (38 pieces of) and their knowledge of Masonry, teaching them how to write.

The same year saw a trade with the Spanish, yielding the knowledge of Iron Working, for, you guessed it, Writing. And whaddaya know, they don't get any Iron, we do. It turns out Trondheim is settled directly on an Iron source. Not to mention a second one is near.

Our archers started killing barbarians, to make the place safe for new Settlers, soon to come.

And we watered a second Curragh, called Sunset. This one will go south. Let's see what what wondrous lands await us there.

Later we met some neighbours of the Mongols - the Egyptians. They gave us more gold, this time for Alphabet.

A moment for our heroes. The Sunrise was sunk by barbarians in 1050 BC. Too bad, as the continent it discovered seems big. The commision of new ships was ordered.

Upon learning the knowledge of Masonry, Modo decided to start a grand project, that would keep all Vikings happy and prospering for millenia. Citizens of Trondheim began building the Pyramids.

And thus ends the reign of Modo. Over to the successor.

Tips for Grandpa:

Under Despotism it doesn't make sense to Irrigate Grassland, unless it has a food bouns. The third food unit gets lost because of a penalty for this government, so Mine instead. OTOH, it's useful to Irrigate tiles with food bonuses (except Sugar), because they provide enough food to overcome a part of the penalty. That's why I Irrigated the Cattle tile only.

Before building units, try hard to build Barracks first - Veteran troops rock.

A Curragh can sink in a Sea square, if it ends it's turn there. Under the AU Mod, it can't enter Ocean squares at all, and it uses 2 movement points to enter a Sea square.

Here's a map of Scandinavia, 975 BC. Did I mention, that I like doing screenies?

Turn thread:
950BC: Germans build Oracle.
910BC: Settler produced at Bergen. Moving to settle 2336 from Bergen.
890BC: Settler produced at Grandpa's Trolldom. Moving to settle 222 from there.
870BC: Worker ambushed by surprise Barbarian invasion (well, 1 warrior). Crushed by local (Gpa Trolldom) garrison.
850BC: Archer SW of Trondheim destroys Barbarian camp. 25gp earned.
825BC: Doghouse settled 222 of Gpas Trolldom. Waterbowl settled 2336 of Bergen. Another civ is discovered by Sunset (no contact made, but a new color of border- orange!)
800BC: Contact made with English by Sunset. Mysticism sold for 32gp (ATH).
775BC: Gpas Pearl o Mine, Gpas Trolldom, and Bergen produce Settlers. Pearl goes 888 to settle; Trolldom goes 4111114 to settle; Bergen goes 422441 to settle.
725BC: Arabs build Colossus.
710BC: Hills of the Red Baron settled 888 of Pearl. Woodstock settled 22 of Trondheim (422441 from Bergen).
650BC: Sunset and Longboat Water Dish defeat Barbarian ships, avenging Sunrise.
630BC: Longboat Red Baron lost in treacherous waters attempting to return from the Mongol Island to pick up a settler. Philosophy developed, leading to Map Making, and Mathematics is begun.
610BC: Barb horseman surprises another worker near Doghouse. Archer retaliates by burning down the horseman's encampment, earning Elite status. English buy Writing from us for 45gp (ATH).
590BC: Doghouse sacked for 9gp by aforementioned horseman. Chinese complete Pyramids in Bejing. Trondheim is panickedly changed to Mausoleum of Mausollos and delayed as much as possible, with Polytheism quickly changed over to. 11 turns -> Poly, 12 turns -> Mausoleum. Care will be needed to change at the crucial turn to ToA.
570BC: Sunset survives (without losing its one hp) a battle with a barbarian ship that apparently has 4 moves (moves one coast square, one 2mp-sea square, and then attacks - or does it have "all water as road"?)
550BC: Pearl builds a second settler, intended to settle the Ivory near the Mongol territory. Then begins building a galley to take it there. Bergen begins building Lighthouse, to make for safe sailing. Sunset makes contact with French, skirting around another barb ship. Mysticism sold to French for 160gp (ATH). They have Mathematics, but won't trade it even for both Writing and Mysticism ("Doubtful"), so gold is taken as preferable, allowing 1 turn cut off polytheism (8 compared to 10 turns of Mausoleum).
(Turn to 530BC): Sunset finally vanquished off of the coast of France by a barbarian galley. The nation weeps.

And that's all she wrote, folks. Attached is the save, as usual. My main goals were consolidating our territory by building nearby cities in good spots, with only Beachhouse being far away (but a cornerstone to the final expansion). One "internal" city, ultimately a good worker pump, built (Woodstock), and Hills of Red Baron is a "push" against the Spanish; and building up our trade infrastructure, basically building as many roads as I could in spaces we use.

I decided not to begin a military push against Spain, mostly because they have pretty poor territory, not very much of it, and no real ability to expand or fight. Certainly no iron, and no resource we need. We probably should try to keep them as a tech whore if we can, they'll never be great but they can build offshoot techs for us probably.
